{"id":249936,"date":"2017-04-03T12:36:30","date_gmt":"2017-04-03T19:36:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=249936"},"modified":"2017-04-04T10:28:54","modified_gmt":"2017-04-04T17:28:54","slug":"cameron-van-der-burgh-blasts-100-07-100-breast-to-open-south-african-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cameron-van-der-burgh-blasts-100-07-100-breast-to-open-south-african-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Cameron van der Burgh Blasts 1:00.07 100 Breast to Open South African Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The battle for fast times has begun as Mzansi\u2019s youth and elite swimmers kicked off the 2017 SA National Aquatic Championships at the Kings Park Swimming Pool in Durban today, Monday, 3<sup>rd<\/sup> April.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s event doubles as the official 17<sup>th<\/sup> FINA World Championships and 6<sup>th<\/sup> FINA Junior World Championships Trials, which are due to take place in Hungary from <span data-term=\"goog_464320093\">14-30 July<\/span> and the USA from <span data-term=\"goog_464320094\">23-28 August<\/span>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Olympian <strong>Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong> did not disappoint the Durban crowd as he swam to a FINA World Championship qualification time of 1:00.07 in the 100 breaststroke semi-finals to take the lead in<span data-term=\"goog_464320095\">tomorrow<\/span> evening\u2019s final, while <strong>Michael Houlie<\/strong> (16), <strong>Daniel Swanepoel<\/strong> (18), <strong>Bryce Skea<\/strong> (17), <strong>Duncan Rudolph<\/strong> (17) and <strong>Bailey Musgrave<\/strong> (18) all dipped under the FINA Junior qualification time of 1:03.74.<\/p>\n<p>The gold in the 400 freestyle went to <strong>Matthew Meyer<\/strong> in 3:49.55 ahead of <strong>Brent Szurdoki<\/strong> in 3:51.21 but the real winner was 18 year old Jarryd Baxter, who claimed the bronze in a FINA Junior World Championships qualification time of 3:51.85.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Meder<\/strong> (14), <strong>Gabi Grobler<\/strong> (17) and <strong>Christina Mundell<\/strong> (15) penciled their names on the 6<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>FINA Junior World Swimming Championships qualification list as they finished the 200m individual medley semi-finals with the top three spots, clocking 2:17.80, 2:20.17 and 2:20.51, respectively. The final of the event will take place <span data-term=\"goog_464320096\">tomorrow<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 butterfly semi-final, 14-year-old <strong>Dune Coetzee<\/strong> finished in second place with a FINA Junior World Championships qualification time of 1:01.67 to the required 1:01.90, while Seychelles\u2019 <strong>Felicity Passon<\/strong> was first in 1:00.82. The final of the event will be held <span data-term=\"goog_464320097\">tomorrow<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The ladies continued to dominate the semi-finals as <strong>Erin Gallagher<\/strong> (18) also raced to a FINA Junior World Championships qualification time of 26.14 in the 50 freestyle, to the required 26.47.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Douglas Erasmus<\/strong> was quick off the block in the 50 butterfly semi-final, finishing first in 24.16, ahead of Reynard Wessels in 24.28 and Zane Waddell in 24.29.<\/p>\n<p>In the multi-disability section, <strong>Aaron Putz<\/strong> won the gold in the 100 backstroke (S14-S15) in a time of 1:14.64, followed by <strong>Raymond de Freitas<\/strong> in 1:16.27 and <strong>Valentino Vergotine<\/strong> in 1:21.33, while <strong>Jean Pretorius<\/strong> brought home the gold in the S1-S13 category in 1:10.75 ahead of Franco Smit in 1:11.67 and Dave Williams in 1:27.45.<\/p>\n<p>On the ladies side, the 100 backstroke (S14-S15) gold went to <strong>Christelle Kriel<\/strong> in 1:18.94, while <strong>Shannon Martins<\/strong> won the S1-S13 event in 1:31.24.<\/p>\n<p>The day 02 heats will start at <span data-term=\"goog_464320098\">10h00<\/span> while the finals will begin at <span data-term=\"goog_464320099\">18h00<\/span> daily.<\/p>\n<p>The staging of this event has been made possible through the
