DEFIANCE, Ohio, August 31. THE Defiance College athletics department has announced that it will add men's and women's swimming and diving for the 2011-2012 season. The addition of the two teams will bring the number of varsity collegiate athletic programs offered at DC up to 20.<\/p>\n
"I am thrilled that we will now be able to offer swimming and diving for our students at Defiance College," said DC President Mark Gordon. "We very much want to expand opportunities for all DC students, and this is just one of the many ways in which we are doing just that. I am confident that our swimming and diving teams will continue our longstanding tradition of dedicated student-athletes who are successful in the classroom, in athletic pursuits and in life."<\/p>\n
The DC swimming and diving teams will compete in a full varsity schedule during the winter of 2011-2012 and will use the Defiance Area Y for practice and home competitions. A search for the first swimming and first diving head coaches in DC history will begin on September 1.<\/p>\n
"I am very grateful to Glenn Kuhn and the Defiance Y for working with us to help make these teams a reality," added Gordon.<\/p>\n
Kuhn, the executive director at the Defiance Y, stated, "The partnership between Defiance College and the Defiance Area Y to provide a competitive swimming program for DC utilizing the YMCA facilities is another example of collaboration to use community resources to enhance both programs."<\/p>\n
Defiance will join Franklin, Rose-Hulman and Transylvania as the only Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference institutions to offer swimming and diving and will compete as an independent.<\/p>\n
"I am excited that we are adding men's and women's swimming and diving to our athletics program here at DC," said Defiance College's Director of Athletics Jenni Morrison. "I feel that it is a great addition to the sports that we already offer. I look forward to working with the Defiance Y to help make these programs a success."<\/p>\n
