SARASOTA, Fla. YMCA INDY SWIMFIT swam away with top team honors as the YMCA Masters National Championships closed in Sarasota on Sunday, April 29. <\/p>\n
The Indianapolis-based team coached by former USMS president, Mel Goldstein, took the combined team title for large teams with a whopping 2,596.5 points. It also swept the women's and men's titles, scoring 1,262 points to win the women's large team title and 1,128.5 to take the men's. Anne Arundel County Y was second in both the combined and women's team races, while Summerville Y was second in the men's.<\/p>\n
South Hills Area YMCA edged Schroeder Y for the combined team title for small teams, 984.5 to 929.5.
\nSummerville took the women's crown while Schroeder swam off with the men's.<\/p>\n
Twenty-six national Y records fell on the final day, 15 by the men and 11 by the women. Four swimmers–all men–were double record-setters on the final day of competition. Jack Groselle, 47, completed a perfect meet with national Y marks in the 100 free (47.84) and 200 IM (2:04.79) for men 45-49.<\/p>\n
Cav Cavanaugh ripped two men's 65-69 records, clocking
\n55.98 in the 100 free–almost four seconds under the old standard–and 2:36.49 in the 200 IM. Cavanaugh's 100 free time also eclipses the USMS record of 56.24, set by Peter Powlison in 1987.<\/p>\n
E. Don McCullough notched two men's 85-89 records. His 4:57.38 for the 200 breast slashed almost a full minute off the old record and his 3:15.73 in the 100 fly established a national Y mark for the first time.<\/p>\n
Mike Freshley broke the men's 60-64 record for 200 yard breaststroke with his 2:41.92, eight-tenths of a second faster than the former mark. In the 100 free, he equalled the national Y standard of 56.34.<\/p>\n
Two 91 year-olds set national Y standards in the 90-94 division. Boyd Campbell stroked 1:21.90 for the men's 50 backstroke, while Julia Dolce touched in 2:08.96 for the women's 100 free. Her time also betters the USMS mark of 2:12.13 set by 1920-24 Olympian Aileen Soule in 1996.<\/p>\n
When Danielle Ogier won the women's 45-49 200 individual medley, she led four women under the old record. Ogier touched first in 2:24.59, smashing the Y record of 2:39.93. aAlso breaking the old mark were Mary Ann Stevens 92:31.59), Peggy McDonnell (2:36.35) and Pamela Mumma (2:39.08).<\/p>\n
