DAYTONA Beach&#39;s Ryan Lochte had way too much of a backhalf tonight for NBAC&#39;s Michael Phelps to withstand during the men&#39;s 200 IM at the U.S. Long Course Nationals.<\/p>\n<p>Lochte put together the fifth-fastest time of all time with a blazing fast effort of 1:54.84.  He owns two of the other top four with the world record of 1:54.10 and the U.S. Open record of 1:54.56. Phelps has the other two with a 1:54.23 and 1:54.80 on his resume. <\/p>\n<p>Phelps, meanwhile, placed second overall in 1:55.94 for what proved to be an incredibly fast finale for the two.  The two moved light years ahead of the previously top-ranked time of 1:57.76 set by James Goddard at the British Nationals in March. The loss is Phelps&#39; first in the 200 IM at a U.S. Nationals since his finished third to Tom Wilkens and Robert Margalis in his first U.S. Nationals 200 IM competition at the 2001 U.S. Spring Nationals held in Austin, Texas.  The meet is likely one of Phelps&#39; strongest memories as he became the youngest American male to set a world record at that meet with a 1:54.92 in the 200-meter fly at the age of 15.<\/p>\n<p>FAST&#39;s Tyler Clary also cleared 2:00 with a third-place effort of 1:59.19. That performance clipped his previously ninth-ranked season best of 1:59.52 and move him up to seventh in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Longhorn&#39;s Eric Shanteau (2:00.03), Lake Forest&#39;s Conor Dwyer (2:00.71), NBAC&#39;s Todd Patrick (2:00.79), Hershey&#39;s David Nolan (2:01.01) and Longhorn&#39;s Austin Surhoff (2:01.51) placed fourth through eighth.<\/p>\n<p>Tucson Ford&#39;s Cory Chitwood provided some outside smoke from lane one in the B final with a touch-out triumph over Duneland&#39;s Kyle Whitaker, 2:01.83 to 2:01.87. <\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/20100803usnatsd4f.pdf target=_blank>Day Four Finals Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p><font color=Red>Coverage Sponsored by TYR<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the most comprehensive coverage in the business provided by the Swimming World team, check out the Event Landing Page for recaps, results, photos and videos from Irvine!
