She was challenged briefly by Williams&#8217; <strong>Megan Pierce<\/strong> but ultimately won the event by eleven seconds in 16:27.82, a best for her by 32 seconds this season. Just a sophomore, this was Durmer&#8217;s first Division III NCAA Championships and first individual national title after finishing sixth in the 200 IM and second in the 400 IM.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce finished the race and her collegiate swimming career with a fourth place finish in this event in 16:44.32, an eight second drop and her fourth-straight All-American title in this event. Kenyon&#8217;s <strong>Marysol Arce<\/strong> finished second in 16:39.11 while Illinois-Wesleyan&#8217;s <strong>Meg Stanley<\/strong> took third in 16:41.93.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Campbell Costley<\/strong> of Denison took fifth in 16:54.14 while Williams&#8217; <strong>Alison McNamara<\/strong> finished sixth in 16:55.66. <strong>Gail Anderson<\/strong> of Kenyon (16:58.68) and Connecticut&#8217;s <strong>Valerie Urban<\/strong> (17:01.34) finished seventh and eighth out of the morning heats. Greenhalgh, Johns Hopkins<\/p>\n<p>Kenyon&#8217;s <strong>Arthur Conover\u00a0<\/strong>earned back his national title in this event from 2015. After finishing third as a freshman and second as a junior, Conover&#8217;s time was just off his NCAA record but enough to take the win for the Lords. He was challenged by Johns Hopkins&#8217; <strong>Andy Greenhalgh<\/strong> over the last 500 yards, but Greenhalgh ran out of room to make a move. Greenhalgh was last year&#8217;s champion after earning runner-up honors the two years prior.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Gordon<\/strong> had a big swim for Emory moving up from the fourth seed to finishing third. His time of was a best by over twenty seconds. Freshman <strong>Benjamin Brewer<\/strong> of Cal Lutheran earned his first All-American title by racing to a 15:28.80 and earning fourth place. Brewer will be part of the future of this event as Conover and Greenhalgh (and all four of their historic NCAA miles) will be graduating this year.<\/p>\n<p>Williams&#8217; <strong>Andrew Trunksy<\/strong>, another freshman, took fifth-place honors dropping 12 second (15:31.22) while classmate <strong>Ben Culberson<\/strong> of Claremont Mudd-Scripps took sixth in 15:32.19. Both swimmers earned their first individual All-American titles after earning one in the 800 free relay as well.
