THE third day of preliminary competition is complete at the 2010 U.S. Long Course Nationals.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 breast<\/b><br \/>\nThis evening could feature an incredibly fast center two lanes as Trojan Swim Club teammates Rebecca Soni and Jessica Hardy do battle for supremacy.  Soni (1:06.53) and Hardy (1:06.90) checked in with easy speed sub 1:07s to take the top two qualification spots into the finale. Soni has been faster this year with a second-ranked 1:05.90, while Hardy jumped from an eighth-ranked season best of 1:07.72 into fifth in the world.  Only three other swimmers have cleared 1:07 this year: Leisel Jones (1:05.79), Yuliya Efimova (1:06.66) and Rikke Moeller Pedersen (1:06.80).<\/p>\n<p>Coming off a strong NCAA outing, Tucson Ford&#39;s Annie Chandler earned third with a 1:07.88 to move up to 11th in the world, while Auburn&#39;s Micah Lawrence finished fourth in 1:08.31 to grab a top 20 spot. <\/p>\n<p>KING&#39;s Megan Jendrick (1:08.49), Nittany Lion&#39;s Corrie Clark (1:08.63), Tucson Ford&#39;s Amanda Beard (1:08.72) and Trojan&#39;s Keri Hehn (1:08.85) all beat 1:09 to make the finale.  <\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 fly<\/b><br \/>\nA trio of 52 second times went up on the board in the sprint fly, with NBAC&#39;s Michael Phelps cruising into the top seed this evening.  Phelps clocked a 52.54, just off his 10th-ranked season best of 52.41 from the Charlotte Grand Prix.  He will be shooting for the top-ranked time of 51.70 set by Evgeny Korotyshkin at the Russian National Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Auburn&#39;s Tyler McGill (52.69) and Ohio State&#39;s Tim Phillips (52.78) also broke 53 seconds to move into the top 25 in the world this year.<\/p>\n<p>Athens Bulldog Mark Dylla (53.32), Team Rebel&#39;s David Seiler (53.46), Longhorn&#39;s Ricky Berens (53.48), California&#39;s Tom Shields (53.54) and Longhorn&#39;s Aaron Peirsol (53.57) will also vie for the national title this evening.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 free<\/b><br \/>\nTrojan&#39;s Jessica Hardy will have a tough decision to make this evening, as she&#39;s already said this morning that she is likely to scratch one of the two events in finals depending on how the morning went.  With a strong 100 breast already in hand, she threw down a quick 25.11 to top the women&#39;s splash-and-dash qualifying. That time is just off her seventh-ranked season best of 25.09 set at the Austin Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>With the scratch deadline complete for both events, Hardy looks to be swimming both events tonight.<\/p>\n<p>FAST&#39;s Kara Lynn Joyce turned in a 25.31 to qualify second, while California&#39;s Dana Vollmer touched third in 25.36. SwimAtlanta&#39;s Amanda Weir tied with Vollmer for third with a 25.36, while California&#39;s Madison Kennedy (25.56), Tucson Ford&#39;s Christine Magnuson (25.61), Colorado Stars&#39; Missy Franklin (25.63) and Stanford&#39;s Samantha Woodward (25.68) also picked up spots in the championship finale.  <\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 free<\/b><br \/>\nIn what should be an entertaining finale, California&#39;s Nathan Adrian turned in the top seed with a 22.10. He&#39;s been a bit faster this year with a fifth-ranked 22.01 and will be looking to crack 22 seconds for the first time this year.  <\/p>\n<p>SwimMAC&#39;s Josh Schneider (22.22) and Cullen Jones (22.29) finished second and third with times ranked among the top 20, while California&#39;s Will Copeland tied Longhorn&#39;s Garrett Weber-Gale for fourth with matching 22.38s. <\/p>\n<p>Tucson Ford&#39;s Matt Grevers (22.53) and Adam Small (22.57) qualified sixth and seventh, while SwimMAC&#39;s Nick Brunelli gave his club three in the championship heat with an eighth-place 22.69.<\/p>\n<p>Schneider, however, swum the 50 free under protest as he had no showed the men&#39;s 100 fly earlier in the day.  After a hearing, Schneider was ruled to be in violation and his 50 free was disqualified.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the top eight is as follows: Adrian (22.10), Jones (22.29), Copeland (22.38), Weber-Gale (22.38), Grevers (22.53), Small (22.57) and Brunelli (22.69) with Longhorn Jimmy Feigen moving up into the top eight with a 22.71. <\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 400 IM<\/b><br \/>\nAfter a swift run through of the 50 frees, the distance medley slowed down the conclusion of the third day of prelims.  The swimming in the water, though, was not slow. California&#39;s Caitlin Leverenz raced to the top spot with a 4:36.76 to move to sixth in the world just ahead of Ariana Kukors&#39; seventh-ranked season best of 4:37.63 from the Austin Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>Bluefish&#39;s Elizabeth Beisel also beat 4:40 with a second-seeded time of 4:39.35 \u2013 just off her season best of 4:39.12 that ranks her 10th in the world.  FAST&#39;s Katie Hoff cruised into the third seed with a 4:40.00, shy of her ninth-ranked season best of 4:38.59 also from Austin.<\/p>\n<p>KING&#39;s Andie Taylor (4:42.23) and Germantown&#39;s Teresa Crippen (4:43.38) placed fourth and fifth, while Kukors eased through the morning with a sixth-seeded 4:43.61.
