KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, August 2. TENNESSEE head swimming coach John Trembley announced Saturday that former Tennessee swimmer Lars Jorgensen is joining the coaching staff in an interim role.<\/p>\n
Jorgensen (pronounced: JOR-gun-sun) will be an interim assistant, stepping in for longtime assistant coach Joe Hendee, who took a leave of absence to battle cancer in June 2010.<\/p>\n
"Joe Hendee is and will remain at UT as assistant coach," Trembley said. "But we are very fortunate to be able to hire Lars Jorgensen as assistant coach, as well.<\/p>\n
"Lars is respected nationwide as a coach blessed with integrity and humility. He bleeds orange and is coming home to help our team in every way possible."<\/p>\n
Before arriving back on The Hill, Jorgensen was at the helm of swimming program at the University of Toledo for six years. <\/p>\n
During his stint with the Rockets, Jorgensen earned a 34-17-1 (.676) dual-meet record, coached his team to the 2010 Mid-American Conference championship, earned two MAC Coach of the Year honors (2010, 2007) and coached 16 individual MAC champions.<\/p>\n
He lettered at Tennessee in 1993, earning a silver medal in the mile freestyle at the SEC Championships that year. His 1,000 freestyle record of nine minutes 5.38 seconds, set in 1992, is one of the Vols longest-standing school records.<\/p>\n
Prior to his time as a Big Orange collegian, Jorgensen represented the U.S. in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, finishing ninth in the 1,500-meter freestyle. <\/p>\n
"I'm excited to be back at my alma mater. I want to help this team win a championship this year, that's my goal." Jorgensen said. "It's a tough situation with Joe, and he will always be in my thoughts.<\/p>\n
"This is a dream come true. It was tough to leave Toledo\u2014I really enjoyed working there and had a very special group there. But I couldn't be more excited to be back on Rocky Top."<\/p>\n
