QUANTICO, Virginia, August 2. FORMER Gator swimmer Greg Burgess (Jacksonville, Fla.) will be inducted this Friday into the United States Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame in Quantico, Virginia. The USMC Sports Hall of Fame honors previous Marines who have excelled both on and off the athletic playing field.<\/p>\n
Major Burgess., who has already served two tours of duty in Iraq, will be inducted along with three other Marines by General James T. Conway at an 11 a.m. ceremony celebrating their achievements. <\/p>\n
The former 12-time All-American at Florida (1991-94) has served in the USMC since 1997, one year after representing his country as an athlete in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. Four years earlier in 1992, Maj. Burgess captured a silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain.<\/p>\n
At Florida, Maj. Burgess was a four-time national champion, tied for third-most in school history on the men's side. The 1993 NCAA Male Swimmer of the Year also dominated the SEC, winning seven SEC championships en route to being named the 1993 and 1994 SEC Male Swimmer of the Year.<\/p>\n
Established in 2001, the Hall of Fame has enshrined 33 former Marines, including such names as Hall of Fame baseball player Ted Williams, Hall of Fame boxer Ken Norton and legendary golf player Lee Trevino.<\/p>\n
