California won its third straight 200 free relay title with a 1:25.59 for a new NCAA record. It will not stand as the American Record because of anchor <strong>Farida Osman<\/strong>, who is Egyptian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong>, <strong>Maddie Murphy<\/strong>, <strong>Amy Bilquist<\/strong> and Osman comprised of the new record setting relay. They out-touched Stanford, who will keep their American Record title with a 1:25.91. Osman anchored the relay in a 20.91, the fastest in the field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong>, <strong>Lia Neal<\/strong>, <strong>Janet Hu<\/strong> and <strong>Ally Howe<\/strong> swam for the Cardinal. Georgia was third at 1:26.49 with <strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong>, <strong>Veronica Burchill<\/strong>, <strong>Emily Cameron<\/strong> and <strong>Chantal Van Landeghem<\/strong>. Ledecky broke all the records at 4:24.06, a second under the old record at 4:25.15. An equally impressive swim, <strong>Leah Smith<\/strong> broke 4:30 for the first time with a 4:28.90, moving her up to the 11th fastest performance of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky and Smith were way ahead from the rest of the field the entire way, the only question was how far they could both go under their best times. Smith had been knocking on the 4:30 barrier for two years now and she finally did it tonight while trailing one of the best swimmers in history. This is Stanford&#8217;s first title in the 500 free since 2001 when <strong>Jessica Foschi<\/strong> won it at 4:37.81. That time will put Baker as the second fastest performer in history in the event. This is also Baker&#8217;s first NCAA title, as she was an Olympian and silver medalist last summer in the 100 backstroke. Baker held off hard charging <strong>Ella Eastin<\/strong> of Stanford at 1:52.27, who will keep her NCAA and American Record from last year. Ultimately, it was the silver medalist in this event that out-touched the whole field. Stanford sophomore <strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong> won the race for her second NCAA title in the event with a 21.17 for the win, under the NCAA record set by <strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> last year at 21.21.<\/p>\n<p>Smoliga, who won the event last year, was second at 21.27 and Ohio State&#8217;s <strong>Liz Li<\/strong> was third at 21.29. Li had led at the turn but Manuel did what she always seems to do,\u00a0coming out of nowhere to get her hand on the wall first. Manuel is now the second fastest performer all time in the event and it is Stanford&#8217;s 10th title in the event. Manuel last won it in 2015. It is also the first 1m title for Texas since 1998 when <strong>Vera Ilyina<\/strong> won back to back titles in 97 and 98.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas freshman won the competition ahead of last year&#8217;s diver of the year in <strong>Sharae Zhang<\/strong> of Nevada and Olympian <strong>Kassidy Cook<\/strong> of Stanford. This is the fourth straight year that Stanford has won the 400 medley relay NCAA title. Cal originally touched first at 3:26.18 after leading the whole way, thanks to a stellar lead off from <strong>Kathleen Baker<\/strong> at 49.80 to become the second fastest performer in history in the 100 back.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford had <strong>Ally Howe\u00a0<\/strong>(51.42), <strong>Kim Williams\u00a0<\/strong>(58.51), <strong>Janet Hu <\/strong>(50.27)\u00a0and <strong>Lia Neal <\/strong>(46.15)\u00a0swimming on the relay that won at 3:26.35. Texas A&amp;M moved up to third with<strong> Lisa Bratton\u00a0<\/strong>(51.60), <strong>Jorie Caneta\u00a0<\/strong>(58.60), <strong>Sarah Gibson<\/strong>\u00a0(50.28) and <strong>Beryl Gastaldello<\/strong>\u00a0(47.12) at 3:27.60. Third went to Texas at 3:27.74 with <strong>Tasija Karosas <\/strong>(50.83), <strong>Madisyn Cox\u00a0<\/strong>(58.30), <strong>Lauren Case<\/strong>\u00a0(51.72) and <strong>Rebecca Millard\u00a0<\/strong>(46.89).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lilly King<\/strong> uncorked a huge 56.17 breaststroke split for Indiana, putting them in the lead at the halfway point while <strong>Gia Dalesandro<\/strong> held on to the lead at the 300 with a 50.99 split. Indiana fell to fifth at the end of the race. The fastest butterfly split in the field was <strong>Louise Hansson<\/strong> of USC at 49.78 and the fastest anchor split was Louisville&#8217;s <strong>Mallory Comerford<\/strong> at 46.13. The fastest freestyle split was originally <strong>Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong> of Cal at 45.96, but she jumped early on <strong>Noemie Thomas&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>fly leg after her 50.69 split.<\/p>\n<p>This is Stanford&#8217;s fourth straight title in the relay and their 13th overall.
