{"id":2465,"date":"2001-04-25T10:39:07","date_gmt":"2001-04-25T15:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/uncategorized\/2001\/04\/swim-with-mike-hits-the-3-million-mark\/"},"modified":"2014-07-24T18:09:51","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T01:09:51","slug":"swim-with-mike-hits-the-3-million-mark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swim-with-mike-hits-the-3-million-mark\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Swim With Mike&#8221; Hits the $3 Million Mark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Jenny Keens<\/p>\n<p>     LOS ANGELES, April 25.  &quot;SWIM with Mike,&quot; USC&#39;s annual fund-raiser for physically challenged former athletes, surpassed the $3 million mark last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The unique event, which was established to provide physically challenged former athletes with tuition, room and board, books, on-campus housing and emotional support, raised $375,000 last Saturday, April 21, in the 21st renewal of the fund-raiser.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#39;s swim had its share of great highlights.  Kevin Allman, a young swimmer from Atlanta, traveled all the way to the swim with his family to help raise money for the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund.  Swimmer Dan Redden raised a record $10,000 on his own, while John Chavez, a blind athlete, swam 200 miles.<\/p>\n<p>USC Olympians Klete Keller, Lindsay Benko, Erik Vendt, Bruce Furniss and John Naber held an Olympian Swim Clinic under the guidance of former USC Olympic coach, Peter Daland.<\/p>\n<p>USC was joined in its efforts to raise money for physically challenged athletes by swimmers from Columbia and Princeton University.<\/p>\n<p>The most exciting highlight of the day was the presentaion of the &quot;People Helping People&quot; award to USC alum and Giants cornerback Jason Sehorn.  Sehorn&#39;s commitment to helping single-parent families through his foundation, Sehorn&#39;s Corner, was the reason the &quot;Swim with Mike&quot; committee chose him as this year&#39;s recipient.  Sehorn was accompanied by his fiancee, Angie Harmon, of the TV show, &quot;Law and Order.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Many of the recipients were star athletes who lost their scholarships due to a physically disabling injury.
