Women\u2019s 500 freestyle<\/h2>\n

The Kenyon Ladies put five swimmers into the final heats giving them an early boost in the team scores. Williams also placed a swimmer in each heat, while Emory’s lone swimmer went after the consolation final. Freshman Maria Turcan<\/strong> took control of the consolation final right from the start for the Eagles. She was able to hold off a late charge from Kenyon’s Delaney Ambrosen<\/strong> to win the heat. Turcan finished in\u00a04:53.35 while Ambrosen was close behind in 4:53.76.<\/p>\n

In the championship final, Denison senior Campbell Costley<\/strong> dominantly led the race for the first 475 yards but was just out-touched in the end by Illinois Wesleyan senior Meg Stanley<\/strong>. Stanley brought it home in a 57.05, more specifically a 27.88 to take the title. This was the fastest last 50 and 100 out of anyone in the field. For reference, she was over two seconds behind the leader at the halfway point, splitting the race 2:25.48- 2:25.28. Her winning time of 4:50.76 was a lifetime best and was the senior’s first National Championship title.<\/p>\n

Kenyon earned valuable three-four points in the race as Marysol Arce<\/strong> (4:51.79) and Hannah Orbach-Mandel<\/strong> (4:52.04) took the next two places. Washington University’s Nicole Zanolli<\/strong> also tried to make a move at the end but did not have the Stanley closing speed, finishing fifth in 4:52.49.<\/p>\n

While Kenyon’s Arthur Conover<\/strong> led most of the race, it was not until the last 50 yards that he had a true advantage over challenger Andrew Greenhalgh<\/strong> of Johns Hopkins. Conover broke Greenhalgh’s NCAA record by finishing in 4:18.35; Greenhalgh finished in a lifetime best 4:19.66. Conover came home in a 50.48 to Greenhalgh’s 52.12 which is what made the difference; Greenhalgh actually had the lead by about two tenths at the 400 mark but could not hang on in the end.<\/p>\n
Emory duo Thomas Gordon<\/strong> and Christian Baker\u00a0<\/strong>placed third and fourth, respectively. This will hurt them in the overall team scores as Baker came in with the top seed in this event. Gordon’s third-place swim, however was definitely a breakthrough moment as he raced to a best 4:22.69. Baker finished in 4:24.04. Teammate Henry Copses<\/strong> also picked up an eighth-place finish with a 4:35.19.<\/p>\n
NYU’s Ian Rainey<\/strong> took the consolation final in 4:26.60, followed by Kenyon’s Connor Rumpit<\/strong> in 4:27.86. Kenyon scored 53 in this event overall while Emory picked up 42.<\/p>\n

A pair of Emory Eagles took over the consolation final; Ashley Daniels<\/strong> (2:03.16) and Ming-Fen Ong<\/strong> (2:03.62) both had strong back halves of this race to take advantage of the field. Both swims were big time drops for the swimmers as they earned 16 valuable points on the board as Emory looks to gain on Kenyon in the team scores.<\/p>\n
Virtually a four-way tie at the 150 mark, NYU freshman Honore Collins<\/strong> utilized her dominant freestyle leg to her advantage once again. She out-split the field by over half a second on this leg, finishing in a total time of 2:00.97. Collins came to NYU with a 2:06.39 in this event, and finished fourth a few weeks ago at the UAA Championships. But unlike UAAs, Collins made a statement by bettering her performance at night and earning her first National Title.<\/p>\n
Williams’ backstroker Olivia Jackson touched second in 2:01.49, another breakthrough swim of the night. She was the only swim to break :30 on the second leg posting a 29.44 to put her in the lead at the halfway point. Emory senior Annelise Kowalsky<\/strong> finished third in 2:01.81 and was followed by Kenyon’s Julia Wilson<\/strong> in 2:02.18. Emory’s Julia Durmer<\/strong> also placed sixth in this event, giving 29 more points to Emory when combined with Kowalsky.<\/p>\n

It was only 50 minutes into the meet when Emory senior Andrew Wilson<\/strong> proved that he is out to lead his team to victory. His 1:44.18 finish in this event re-broke his own national record set in December. As predicted, it was his strong breaststroke split of 28.19 that gave him the edge. John’s Hopkins senior Evan Holder<\/strong> was also under the previous NCAA record and repeated as the runner-up in this event. Holder out-split the field in the freestyle leg but it was not quite enough to catch Wilson.<\/p>\n
Defending champion Jackson Lindell<\/strong> of Denison finished third in 1:46.28 followed by Trevor Manz<\/strong> of Kenyon. Combined with classmate Ian Reardon<\/strong>, the Lords scored 32 points in this event currently giving them a 23-point lead over Emory.<\/p>\n
Carrying on the senior dominance in this event, Albion’s Sebastian Tostado<\/strong> claimed the B final in 1:49.14. Six of the top eight swimmers in this event are graduating, and the same goes for half of the overall finals competitors. Next year’s event will certainly be a change of the tides, as it is a good time to be an up-and-comer 200 IMer on the men’s side.<\/p>\n

Williams junior Emma Waddell<\/strong> opted out of the 200 IM for the first time at this meet and it paid off. Waddell claimed her second National Championship Title after winning the 100 fly as a freshman in 2015. Her time of 22.69 was enough to break the NCAA meet record and claim top honors in this event. It was a late surge in the last 15 meters that got Waddell to the wall first.<\/p>\n
She was followed closely by Fiona Muir<\/strong> who repeated as the runner-up in the event but this time a few one-hundredths faster in 22.74. Defending-champion Emma Paulson<\/strong> took third in 23.09. Emory also scored fourth-place points from Marissa Bergh who swam a 23.29.<\/p>\n
Trinty’s Lindsay Hagmann took the consolation final in 23.29 and was followed closely by Emory’s Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe in 23.34. Emory now has a 39-point lead over second-place Williams who is having a great night of competition on day one.<\/p>\n

It is not everyday that the top three seeds take the top three spots in the same order as predicted – especially in the 50 free. But the trio of Emory’s Oliver Smith<\/strong> (19.55), Rowan’s Jesse Novak<\/strong> (19.85) and Keene State’s Ryan Boraski<\/strong> (20.01) did just that.<\/p>\n
Smith led the way in the exact same time he won this event in last year; he led the way from start to finish despite a great effort from Novak. With a great turn and breakout off the wall, Novak improved on his third place finish from last year as did Boraski who ended up twenty-third in 2016. Boraski narrowly edged out the rest of the field as Ian Gaynor<\/strong> was close behind in 20.08.<\/p>\n
Junior Isaac Casey<\/strong> of Loras swam a fast 20.10 to win the consolation final, and will certainly be the swimmer to watch next season behind Smith. Similar to the 200 IM, the men’s 50 is very senior-heavy this year, as second through fifth place will all be graduating in May.<\/p>\n
Emory had three swimmers in this event to Kenyon’s zero. After a first, seventh and sixteenth finish, the Eagle have taken over the lead in the team scores by ten points. As the NCAA Division III record holders in the upcoming 200 medley relay and no men’s diving tonight, you expect Emory to hold onto this lead through tomorrow.<\/p>\n

After earning runner-up honors last year, Wellesley’s Maura Sticco-Ivins<\/strong> claimed the National Title on three-meter. Her score this year was thirty-three and a half points better than what she dove last year as she was the only diver to crack 500 points this time around.<\/p>\n
Ithaca senior Nickie Griesemer<\/strong> took second with 497.20 points and Meghan Bartlett<\/strong> repeated her third-place performance with 481.05 points.<\/p>\n

Emory’s Marissa Bergh<\/strong> raced to an amazing 22.55 anchor leg to bring home the victory for the Eagles. This was the second-fastest anchor leg across the board. She was preceded by Cindy Cheng<\/strong> (25.30), Kowalsky (28.67) and\u00a0Sanchez-Aizcobe (24.31).<\/p>\n
Despite a second-place finish, Denison’s team also swam a fast relay finishing with a 1:41.33. Freshman Kt Kustritz<\/strong> split a 27.82 on the breaststroke leg to keep the Big Red in the mix.<\/p>\n
Third-place Williams had three solid splits and one incredible anchor leg by recent NCAA Division III 50 freestyle Champion Emma Waddell<\/strong>. Her swim of 22.26 was easily the fastest of any swimmer and surged the Ephs past Kenyon, Johns Hopkins and Connecticut College.<\/p>\n

Oliver Smith brought home Emory’s Division III NCAA record-setting relay in a blazing 18.99. Their overall time of 1:26.14 won the event by over two seconds. Sage Ono<\/strong> (22.27) led off the team followed by Wilson (23.16) and Baker (21.72).<\/p>\n
Denison and Washington University took distant second and third places at 1:28.89 and 1:28.99, respectively. The Kenyon team of Ben Baturka<\/strong>, Trevor Manz, Jonathon Zimdars<\/strong> and Weston Carpenter<\/strong> was able to win the consolation final after finishing outside the top eight this morning. Their time of 1:29.26 would have placed fifth, just .01 behind Williams. This would have made the point deficit 10 points smaller headed into day 2.<\/p>\n
MIT, Rowan and NYU were all disqualified in this event, the latter two teams in the consolation final. Emory currently holds the lead with 135 points while Kenyon sits second with 103.<\/p>\n
