That time was just 5 seconds off the NCAA record in the event. Wright had established a new NCAA record in the 1000 free earlier in the meet.<\/p>\n<p>The freshman led for the majority of the race, slowly building her lead after the 500 mark to split 29 mid to highs consistently through the race. Grand Valley State senior and defending 2016 champion\u00a0<strong>Leonie Van Noort\u00a0<\/strong>was 2nd\u00a0in 16:35.35, while Delta State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Caroline Jouisse\u00a0<\/strong>was Free<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Drury freshman\u00a0<strong>Joan Casanovas\u00a0<\/strong>won his second NCAA title of the meet when he touched first in the men&#8217;s 1650 in 15:11.20. Casanovas also won the 500 free last night over defending champion and NCAA record holder <strong>Dion Dreesens.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Casanovas was battling Nova Southeastern junior\u00a0<strong>Frano Lupoli<\/strong> throughout the race, with the two actually within a second of each other going into the final 50. But Casanovas threw down an incredible 24.42 final 50 to separate himself from Lupoli and take the win by 3 seconds. Lupoli ended up finishing 2nd in 15:14.30, while 3rd went Bridgeport freshman\u00a0<strong>Erik Hren\u00a0<\/strong>in 15:16.91. off of their new NCAA record. The team of\u00a0<strong>Marius Kusch\u00a0<\/strong>(43.06),\u00a0<strong>Dion Dreesens\u00a0<\/strong>(42.39),\u00a0<strong>Ben Mayes\u00a0<\/strong>(43.61), and\u00a0<strong>Nick Arakelian\u00a0<\/strong>(43.94) came together to record the fastest time in Division 2 history and beat the rest of the field by 2 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Dreesens split of 42.39 was a big difference-maker from this morning&#8217;s relay and accounted for nearly all of the time dropped. He was the fastest split of the field and the only swimmer to split under 43 seconds. In 2nd was Wingate with a 2:55.01, while Florida Southern finished in 3rd with a 2:56.01.
