Welcome to Swimming World\u2019s live recap of the fourth and final\u00a0day of prelims\u00a0at the 2017 NCAA Division II Nationals in Birmingham, Alabama! Queens will look to\u00a0capture their third consecutive NCAA team championship, with their women securing the right placing in prelims to maintain their growing lead over Drury.<\/p>\n

That time was just 5 seconds off the NCAA record in the event. Wright had established a new NCAA record in the 1000 free earlier in the meet.<\/p>\n The freshman led for the majority of the race, slowly building her lead after the 500 mark to split 29 mid to highs consistently through the race. Grand Valley State senior and defending 2016 champion\u00a0Leonie Van Noort\u00a0<\/strong>was 2nd\u00a0in 16:35.35, while Delta State’s\u00a0Caroline Jouisse\u00a0<\/strong>was 3rd in 16:38.07 to complete the podium.<\/p>\n Drury freshman\u00a0Joan Casanovas\u00a0<\/strong>won his second NCAA title of the meet when he touched first in the men’s 1650 in 15:11.20. Casanovas also won the 500 free last night over defending champion and NCAA record holder Dion Dreesens.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Casanovas was battling Nova Southeastern junior\u00a0Frano Lupoli<\/strong> throughout the race, with the two actually within a second of each other going into the final 50. But Casanovas threw down an incredible 24.42 final 50 to separate himself from Lupoli and take the win by 3 seconds. Lupoli ended up finishing 2nd in 15:14.30, while 3rd went Bridgeport freshman\u00a0Erik Hren\u00a0<\/strong>in 15:16.91. Hren recorded that time from the morning heats.<\/p>\n Theresa Michalak\u00a0<\/strong>continued her record-breaking meet, capturing her fourth individual event title and third NCAA record in the 100 free. Michalak touched the wall in 48.44 to take down\u00a0Patri Castro Ortega’s\u00a0<\/strong>NCAA record of 48.54 from last year’s meet. Michalak will have one more swim at this meet as a part of West Florida’s 400 free relay.<\/p>\n In 2nd was Wingate’s\u00a0Alexis Divelbiss<\/strong> in 49.32, here third runner-up finish after grabbing 2nd in the 200 and 400 IM earlier in the meet. Nova Southeastern senior\u00a0Emma Wahlstrom\u00a0<\/strong>rounded out the podium with a third place 50.10, her first top 8 finish in this event at the national meet.<\/p>\n Marius Kusch\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed his third individual NCAA title in the 100 freestyle, touching first in 43.03 to drop 3-tenths from his prelims swim. Kusch had previously won the 200 IM and 200 butterfly, setting an NCAA record in the latter event.<\/p>\n In 2nd was Delta State’s\u00a0Mattia Schirru\u00a0<\/strong>with a 43.31, while freshman\u00a0Lajos Budai\u00a0<\/strong>ended up 3rd in 43.33. Budai was the top seed coming into the meet and was the only freshman to make an appearance in either the A or B final.<\/p>\n Queens senior\u00a0Hannah Peiffer\u00a0<\/strong>blew away the field in the women’s 200 backstroke, establishing a new NCAA record in the event with a 1:54.48. That took more than a second off of the old record of 1:55.57 from 2014. Peiffer led from start to finish, dominating the race and swimming to a huge best time. Her previous lifetime best had been a 1:56.51 from Queen’s conference meet a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n In 2nd was defending NCAA champion\u00a0Viktoriya Arkhipova\u00a0<\/strong>in 1:56.51, while 100 backstroke champion\u00a0Rachel Helm\u00a0<\/strong>was 3rd in 1:57.05 to round out the podium.<\/p>\n Queens junior\u00a0Paul Pijulet\u00a0<\/strong>won the 200 backstroke to sweep the backstrokes and grab his third event win of the meet. Pijulet touched in 1:42.08, about a second and a half off of his prelims time. In 2nd was Florida Southern’s\u00a0Marco Palacios<\/strong>, who finished in 1:43.44. Nova Southeastern’s\u00a0Marco Aldabe\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed 3rd with a 1:45.71.<\/p>\n Drury’s\u00a0Bailee Nunn\u00a0<\/strong>followed up on her NCAA record from prelims by dropping it even lower in tonight’s final, blasting an incredible 2:09.12 to best the rest of the field by 4 seconds. That slashed another 1.6 seconds from her record from this morning, and gave Nunn her second individual event title of the week.<\/p>\n In 2nd was Cal Baptist senior\u00a0Alena Rumiantceva\u00a0<\/strong>in 2:13.38, while Nova Southeastern junior\u00a0Malin Westman\u00a0<\/strong>was 3rd in 2:13.89.<\/p>\n Nova Southeastern junior\u00a0Anton Lobanov\u00a0<\/strong>made it 2 for 2 in the breaststroke events, taking the 200 in a very fast 1:51.83, just a tenth off of his 2015 NCAA record. Lobanov was out very fast in 53.65 and was able to hold pace through the 150 before falling off just slightly on the last 50 to miss his own record.<\/p>\n The junior still dominated the rest of the field, winning by more than two seconds over runner-up\u00a0Maksim Shcherbakov\u00a0<\/strong>of Fresno Pacific. That just clips Shcherbakov’s best time and improves on his 3rd place finish from last year. The podium was rounded out by Delta State’s\u00a0Alexander Peach<\/strong>, who was 3rd in 1:54.69.<\/p>\n West Florida’s\u00a0Monica Amaral\u00a0<\/strong>took the top spot on 3-meter to sweep the boards at NCAA’s for her senior year. She won with a top score of 505.20, 20 points ahead of runner-up\u00a0Elizabeth Rawlings\u00a0<\/strong>from Wayne State. Amaral’s win moves West Florida to a tie for 7th place in the team standings\u00a0with one more event to go.\u00a0In 3rd was\u00a0Angela Probstfeld\u00a0<\/strong>from Northern Michigan with a score of 476.75.<\/p>\n Drury pulled off a win in the final event of the evening, with the team of\u00a0Zuzanna Chwadeczko\u00a0<\/strong>(50.30),\u00a0Vera Johansson\u00a0<\/strong>(50.53),\u00a0Yekaterina Rudenko\u00a0<\/strong>(50.61), and\u00a0Bailee Nunn\u00a0<\/strong>(48.59) finishing in 3:20.03 to take the top spot on the podium. They were followed closely by Wingate, who finished in 3:20.77 courtesy of a 48.88 anchor leg from\u00a0Alexis Divelbiss.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Queens finished 3rd in 3:21.30, but the Royals were already secured the overall team championship going into the final event. With their 3rd place finish, the Queens women won their third consecutive NCAA Championship with a total of 467 points, 82 points ahead of runner-up Drury.<\/p>\n Queens took their relay record from this morning even lower in finals, posting a 2:53.00 to take nearly a second off of their new NCAA record. The team of\u00a0Marius Kusch\u00a0<\/strong>(43.06),\u00a0Dion Dreesens\u00a0<\/strong>(42.39),\u00a0Ben Mayes\u00a0<\/strong>(43.61), and\u00a0Nick Arakelian\u00a0<\/strong>(43.94) came together to record the fastest time in Division 2 history and beat the rest of the field by 2 seconds.<\/p>\n Dreesens split of 42.39 was a big difference-maker from this morning’s relay and accounted for nearly all of the time dropped. He was the fastest split of the field and the only swimmer to split under 43 seconds. In 2nd was Wingate with a 2:55.01, while Florida Southern finished in 3rd with a 2:56.01.
