MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, July 21. THE opening night of long course competition at the Minneapolis branch of the USA Swimming sectional championships featured winners in eight championship finals.<\/p>\n
Olivia Scott of Academy Bullets opened the meet with a win in the women's 100 freestyle. Using a strong final 50 meters, Scott won with a 56.78 over Ruby Martin of Wisconsin Aquatics, who touched in 57.36, and Stephanie Koch of Ames Cyclone Aquatics, who got third place with a 57.39.<\/p>\n
In the men's 100 free, Stephen Miller touched the wall first with a 50.77, just a little ahead of Dong Kim of Wildcat Aquatics, who finished in 50.98. Paul Gordon, swimming unattached, was third in 51.54.<\/p>\n
Katie Olsen of Sun Devil Aquatics won the women's 200 breast with a 2:30.72. Ashley Wanland, an NCAA finalist in this event, led the race through 150 meters but could not hang on for the win. Wanland's time was 2:30.80. Abigail Duncan of the Aquajets finished third with a 2:36.28.<\/p>\n
The men's 200 breast was won by Matthew Elliott of Peoria with a 2:16.17. A close battle for the silver medal was won by Kevin Puskaric of Wildcat Aquatic with a 2:20.25. Samuel Rowan of Wisconsin Aquatic was third with a 2:20.92.<\/p>\n
Kaylee Jamison of Minnesota Aquatics used the home pool advantage to win the women's 200 fly in 2:15.00. Right behind her was Connie Hsu of Wheaton Swim Club in 2:15.87. Kelsey Hojan Clark was third with a 2:18.34.<\/p>\n
Kevin Baseheart of Schroeder YMCA used a powerful final 50 meters to pull away from the pack and win the men's 200 fly in 2:02.86. Matthew Conway finished second in 2:03.69 and Brian Tremml was third in 2:05.02.<\/p>\n
Danielle Beckwith of Wisconsin Aquatics won the women's 800 free in 8:51.32, eight seconds ahead of silver medalist Aja Van Hout of Badger Aquatics, who finished in 8:59.84. Rounding out the podium was Hannah Whitehead of Minnesota Aquatics with a 9:01.60.<\/p>\n
In the men's 800 free, Daniel Thomson of Hinsdale Swim Club won with an 8:23.78. Second place went to Daniel Conway of Blue Devil with an 8:29.05, and John Nappi of Mount Lebanon Aquatics finished third with an 8:31.68.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
