LANGLEY'S girls and Cave Spring's boys were the Group AAA team champions at the Virginia state prep swimming and diving championships in the Freedom Recreation and Aaquatics Center here, while in Group AA it was Jamestown High that made a clean sweep of both titles.

DIVISION AAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Led by up-and-coming age group star Lindsay Ertter, who won the 200 IM (2:05.77) and 100 breast (1:03.82), Langley splashed to a 244-185 win over Merchville, with South Lakes (146), Kempsville (145) and Mount Vernon (133) taking third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Ertter also contributed a leg on Langley's victorious 200 medley relay, which won in 1:49.75 to runner-up Herndon's 1:50.12.

Langley's Nicole Somers also contributed mightily to the cause, winning the 200 free (1:52.94 to Westfield's Laura Ullrich's 1:53.07) and taking second in the 500. This latter race was won by Yorktown's Meghan Thiel (4:54.65), who was also third in the 200 free (1:54.32).

Langley's final win came in the 400 free, clocking 3:34.68 to South Lakes' 3:40.27.

Aside from Ertter, the meet's sole other double-winner was Marshi Smith (W. T. Woodson), who sped to a 51.95-51.99 100 free win over Krissy Archer (Hickory), then came back to take the gold in the 100 back (57.63). Archer was 50 free champ (24.18).

Lee's Mary Yarrison won the 1-meter diving (454.20), Westfield's Laura Ellrich the 100 fly (56.99), and Thomas Jefferson the 200 free relay (1:39.24 to Langley's 1:40.17).

Cave Spring had a tough time overcoming second-place Menchville (179.5-170) for the boys' team title, while in third was South Lakes (146), followed closely by Kempsville (145) and Mount Vernon (133).

Ironically, Cave Spring failed to win a single event en route to its title, but its superior depth prevailed — similar to the situation at his year's NCAA Division 1 women's Championships, where Coach Jack Bauerle's Lady 'Dawgs won their third-consecutive title while winning only one relay event and no individual titles.

The sole Cave Spring swimmers among theTop 3 in any individual event were 100 flyer Tommy Rappold, runner-up to Menchville's Josh Fulton (50.14-51.01); and IMer Adam Bauman, who finished third.

Cave Spring's best relay finishes were a third in the 200 medley and second in the 400 free.

Menchville scored big points off its win in the 200 medley (1:38.71-1:38.96 over Cave Spring), and Fulton's 100 fly-back double. His time for the latter was 51.06 with West Potomac's Greg Landrum (51.23) hot on his heels.

South Lakes' Chris Meleski was fastest in the 200 free (1:43.13); Oakton's Mike Ott won the 200 IM (1:54.44); Bethel's Joel Cross the 50 free (21.06); Andy Bradley (James Robinson) the 1-meter diving (528.55); Westfield's Rick Eddy the 100 breast (57.89) and South Lakes the 400 sprint relay (3:15.61-3:15.68 over Menchville).

DIVISION AA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Jamestown's girls had it all their win in the AA Championship, racing to a 309.5-213 championship over Lafayette. Tabb (213) was an oh-so-close third (212) while fourth came Potomac Falls (142) and fifth was Blacksburg (136).

On the boys' side Jamestown won by a mere five-point margin (280-275) over Lafayette, with Blacksburg (235), Tabb (225) and Charlottesville (home of Coach Mark Bernardino's Virginia Cavaliers men's Atlantic Coast Conference Champs) fifth (213.5).

In the girls' individual races, Jamestown's Rebecca Knicely was a standout via her outright victory in the 100 free (54.50-54.91 over Bruton's Emily Welty), and her 50 free tie with Welty. Both girls clocked 24.97 with Jamestown's Amy Carlsoin (26.087) in third. Knicely also anchored her school's winning 400 free relay (3:46.09).

Potomac Falls' Becky Horning was the meet's other doubler, scoring wins in the 200 free (1:57.42 to Broad Run's Stefani Lobore's 1:57.81) and 100 fly (59.22 to Monticello's Kate Legg's 59.34).

Lobore moved up a notch in the 100 back with her 59.28-1:00.40 win over Yorktown's Sarah Deibler, who scored a victory of her own in the 200 IM (2:11.74). Second was Poquoson's Kim Loftus, she she scored a win by touching first in the 100 breast (1:09.78).

The 500 free was won by Lafayette's Lauren Wenger (5:14.77) with Jamestown's Erin Homewood a close second (5:14.98).

Jamestown's boys were led by a pair of double winners, John Hartman in the 200 free and 100 back (1:45.29-53.09); and Bobby Huneycutt in the 200 IM (1:58.51) and 500 free (4:51.51).

Jamestown was also second in the 200 medley relay (1:39.32 to winner Tabb's 1:38.54) and third in the 400 sprint relay.

Tabb's Tim Kegelman was also a dual champion, stroking to titles in the 50 free (21.79-22.18 over teammate Jon Keefe) and the 100 breast (59.24 to Bruton's Griff Helfrich's 1:01.40).

Lafayette's Drew Pittman (47.94) won the 100 free; Charlottesville's Sean Carlton the 1-meter diving over teammate Paul Sebring (347.45-189.30); and Tabb's Lyle Babcock the 100 fly (50.97).

— Bill Bell
Check out our feature Product !!
<a href=http://swiminfo.com/swimshop/shop_detail.asp?iPid=492&iCatId=3
ASCA '99 Clinic - 5 Tape Set

MANASSAS, VA.
