Nova Southeastern senior\u00a0<strong>Emma Wahlstrom\u00a0<\/strong>actually led the race through the 450, but Van Noort used a blistering 27.14 final 50 to pass Wahlstrom down the stretch and take the title.<\/p>\n<p>That is the first 500 free title for Van Noort, who came into this meet as the defending 200 free and 1650 champion. The two seniors finished well ahead of the rest of the field, as sophomore\u00a0<strong>Caroline Jouisse\u00a0<\/strong>rounded off the podium in 3rd with a 4:49.60.<\/p>\n<pre><b> Event 21  Women 500 freshman\u00a0<strong>Joan Casanovas\u00a0<\/strong>held off NCAA record holder and defending champions\u00a0<strong>Dion Dreesens\u00a0<\/strong>from Queens, finishing in 4:18.64. Both men dipped under 4:20, as Dreesens was just about a second behind in 4:19.45.<\/p>\n<p>The two were stroke for stroke for much of the race, with Casanovas making a move at the 250 and steadily creeping away from Dreesens. Third went to Simon Fraser&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Adrian VanderHelm<\/strong>, which is the junior&#8217;s third podium appearance after finishing 3rd in the 200 IM and 2nd in the 400 IM earlier in the Backstroke<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Northern Michigan freshman\u00a0<strong>Rachel Helm\u00a0<\/strong>pulled somewhat of an upset in the women&#8217;s 100 back, out-touching top seed\u00a0<strong>Yekaterina Rudenko\u00a0<\/strong>from Drury, 53.79 to 53.83. The two were neck and neck the entire race, with Rudenko going out a few-hundredths faster and Helm coming back exactly one tenth faster.<\/p>\n<p>Queens senior\u00a0<strong>Hannah Peiffer\u00a0<\/strong>was just behind in 53.91, the last woman in the field under 54 seconds. The foursome of\u00a0<strong>Dion Dreesens\u00a0<\/strong>(1:33.62),\u00a0<strong>Paul Pijulet\u00a0<\/strong>(1:35.36),\u00a0<strong>Marius Kusch\u00a0<\/strong>(1:34.15), and\u00a0<strong>Nick Arakelian\u00a0<\/strong>(1:35.33) finished in 6:18.46, blasting through the record and finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of the field. Drury was second in 6:29.81 while Nova Southeastern was 3rd in 6:30.30.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Dion Dreesens lead-off leg was faster than his time in winning the individual event.
