NEW YORK, N.Y., April 20. THE honors keep on pouring in for Kim Black. Today the Georgia senior was named the Verizon Academic All-America Fall\/Winter Women\u00b9s At-Large Team Member of the Year, as
\nannounced by Verizon and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She was also named a member Verison\/CoSIDA Academic All-America First-Team for the second consecutive year.<\/p>\n
"This is another great award for a deserving young lady," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "Not many people earn an Olympic gold medal, are part of three NCAA Championships and more importantly are as successful in the classroom. We are exceptionally proud of Kim and also proud for the University of Georgia Athletic Association. She has been a great
\nrepresentative ever since her arrival."<\/p>\n
The is the first time a member of the Georgia swimming program has been named Team Member of the Year, and it is the 16th All-America honor (first and second team) among 11 Georgia swimmers dating back to 1985.<\/p>\n
Five out of the 16 women named to the Academic All-American first team–comprising athletes from all sports–are swimmers. The other four swimmers are:
\nCatherine Anderson, Penn State; Lindsay Berryman,
\nArizona; Suzy Catterson, Maryland; and Lizzy Flynt,
\nTennessee. <\/p>\n
A native of Liverpool, N.Y., Black helped the Lady Bulldogs to their third straight NCAA championship and fifth consecutive SEC title this year. She was a member of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team at the 2001 NCAAs and SECs, and she set season-bests in three events at SECs. <\/p>\n
Black will be a member of the World University Games team after an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle at World Trials. She will be competing in the 800-meter free relay, the same event she earned a gold medal in at the 2000 Olympic Games. The World University Games will take place in Beijing, China,
\nAug. 22-Sept. 1. <\/p>\n
Black, who is the daughter of James and Nancy Black, is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and a Presidential Scholar at Georgia. During her freshman year at Ohio State University, Black was an OSU Scholar-Athlete and a member of the Dean's List.<\/p>\n
Black has been active in many community service and campus activities, such as Athens-Clarke County Mentor Program, Athens Regional Medical Center and has spoken to numerous elementary schools about setting goals and her experiences at the 2000 Olympic Games. She also has been a member of the Alpha Lamda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Epsilon Delta honor societies. She was a State of Georgia finalist for a Rhodes Scholarship and a 2000-01 Ramsey Scholar as one of the top 10 Georgia athletes by grade-point average.<\/p>\n
Black plans on entering medical school following her undergraduate study at Georgia.<\/p>\n
Black, who was a member of the 2000 GTE\/CoSIDA Academic All-America first team, was selected by a vote of the 1,800-member CoSIDA. To be eligible, an
\nathlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon the national level. CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-America Teams since 1952.<\/p>\n
