﻿{"id":244007,"date":"2017-03-03T12:00:33","date_gmt":"2017-03-03T19:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=244007"},"modified":"2017-03-03T10:29:50","modified_gmt":"2017-03-03T17:29:50","slug":"princeton-stays-perfect-behind-olympian-ashleigh-johnson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/princeton-stays-perfect-behind-olympian-ashleigh-johnson\/","title":{"rendered":"Princeton Stays Perfect Behind Olympian Ashleigh Johnson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Michael Randazzo, Swimming World Contributor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On a weekend when the University of Southern California extended its winning streak to 45 with a thrilling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usctrojans.com\/sports\/w-wpolo\/recaps\/022617aaa.html\" target=\"_blank\">9-8 OT win<\/a> over top-ranked Stanford at the Barbara Kalabus Invitational in California, on the opposite coast Princeton maintained its status as the nation\u2019s only other undefeated women\u2019s water polo team with a nationally televised <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goprincetontigers.com\/news\/2017\/2\/25\/womens-water-polo-johnson-shines-on-national-television-no-10-princeton-beats-no-19-harvard-7-6.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">7-6 decision<\/a> last Saturday over Ivy rival Harvard<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With 10 saves,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-world-presents-the-2016-athletes-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> <span class=\"st\">Ashleigh Johnson<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, who backstopped the US Women\u2019s Senior National Team to gold last August at the Rio Olympics, was a difference maker against the visiting Crimson, allowing the Tigers to run their record to 7-0.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIvy League, Princeton [vs.] Harvard is always going to be a tough game,\u201d Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GregMescallOnAir\/videos\/1753746008179252\/\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> to ESPN\u2019s <strong>Greg Mescall<\/strong> following the match. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to be back in an environment where I can impart all I\u2019ve learned over the past year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Harvard head coach <strong>Ted Minnis<\/strong>, who has known Johnson since she was starring at Florida\u2019s Ramson Everglades High School, was blunt about the task his team faced against the world\u2019s best female goalie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to get past that it&#8217;s Ashleigh Johnson over there\u2014or else she\u2019s got you beat before you even shoot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luis Nicolao<\/strong>, whose Princeton squad missed NCAAs last season because his star took an Olympic-inspired sabbatical, cautioned about expecting too much from his senior goalie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no doubt Ashleigh has the ability to lead this team to great heights, but we have to make sure not to always rely on her,\u201d he said. \u201cThis past weekend showed that we still have work to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The match was tied at five through three periods, but a defensive-minded Crimson squad simply couldn&#8217;t overcome both Johnson and history. Princeton now holds an incredible 40-1 edge over Harvard with the lone defeat coming in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey do a very good job of funneling shots into [Johnson] and dictating where the shots going to come\u2014if we can break that chain we have a chance to score,\u201d Minnis said about a Princeton defense surrendering a paltry 4.5 goals a game.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify for the 2017 NCAA Women\u2019s Water Polo Tournament both teams will need to leapfrog<strong> Collegiate Water Polo Association<\/strong> (CWPA) foes Indiana and Michigan by capturing the CWPA&#8217;s automatic berth.<\/p>\n<p>The men\u2019s and women\u2019s coach at Harvard since 2010, Minnis understands that its the Wolverines and Tigers who are most deserving of the East&#8217;s top billing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Princeton and Michigan are getting the most publicity,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The Tigers have the best goalie in the world and Michigan\u2019s coming off of a big Final Four run last year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Harvard (4-2) is flying under the radar for now\u2014which suits the Crimson coach just fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNCAAs is not the ultimate goal for us,\u201d Minnis said. \u201cAs much as it was to make the Final Four [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalwaterpolo.com\/2016\/12\/03\/joy-berkeley-harvard-water-polo-fans-crimson-face-usc-final-four\/\" target=\"_blank\">last year <\/a>with the Harvard men\u2019s team]\u2014and that&#8217;s what you talk about\u2014the most important goal for us is to win a conference championship.
