﻿{"id":243778,"date":"2017-02-27T14:50:15","date_gmt":"2017-02-27T21:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=243778"},"modified":"2017-03-01T20:58:26","modified_gmt":"2017-03-02T03:58:26","slug":"oakland-dominates-horizon-league-swimming-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/oakland-dominates-horizon-league-swimming-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Oakland Dominates Horizon League Swimming Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Oakland Golden Grizzlies swept the women&#8217;s and men&#8217;s team titles at the Horizon League Swimming Championships for a fourth consecutive season over the weekend in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>The Oakland women finished with 842.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Milwaukee (626.5). Rounding out the top five were Illinois-Chicago (417), Wisconsin-Green Bay (401) and Cleveland State (382).<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#8217;s side, Cleveland State scored 663 points to make things a little bit more interesting, but Oakland ended up scoring 839.5 points to pull away. Cleveland State finished second, followed by Illinois-Chicago (522), Wright State (423.5) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (391).<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s Meet<\/h3>\n<p>Oakland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Patricia Aschan<\/strong> was the meet&#8217;s top performer and received the Swimmer of the Meet award for her efforts. First, she won the 200 IM in 2:00.72, and later on she added wins in the 400 IM (4:15.06) and 200 back (1:58.19) to her ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Also earning multiple wins was teammate <strong>Holly Morren<\/strong>, who swept the 50 free (22.58) and 100 free (49.14), setting a new meet record in the later distance and\u00a0Illinois-Wisconsin&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brie Hines<\/strong>, the winner of the the 500 free in a meet record-time of 4:49.22 and also the 1650 free in 16:38.68.<\/p>\n<p>In diving, Wright State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kyah Fleckner\u00a0<\/strong>won both the 1-meter (score of 297.75) and 3-meter (312.85).<\/p>\n<p>Oakland took home four relay wins: the 800 free (7:21.25), 200 free (1:31.50), 400 medley (3:45.51) and 400 free (3:21.63) and also got individual wins from\u00a0<strong>Takara Martin<\/strong> in the 100 breast (1:01.22) and\u00a0<strong>Rachel Waite\u00a0<\/strong>in the 200 breast (2:11.94).<\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee set a meet record in winning the 200 medley relay in 1:39.52, and two Milwaukee swimmers earned individual wins:\u00a0<strong>Mandie Siehs\u00a0<\/strong>in the 200 free (1:49.18) and\u00a0<strong>Sarah Bentley\u00a0<\/strong>in the 100 back (55.10).<\/p>\n<p>Other winners included Wright State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Hayhow\u00a0<\/strong>in the 100 fly (53.98) and Cleveland State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Molly McNamara\u00a0<\/strong>in the 200 fly (1:58.79).<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s meet<\/h3>\n<p>Oakland ended up winning the team championship, but\u00a0Cleveland State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Philipp Sikatzki<\/strong> made it tough with three individual wins. He posted times of 45.97 in the 100 fly, 46.63 in the 100 back and 42.94 in the 100 free, the last of those swims in meet record-time on his way to swimmer of the meet honors.<\/p>\n<p>Sikatski also led his Cleveland State teammates to wins in both the 400 medley (3:12.74) and 400 free relays (2:56.33), and Cleveland State also got wins from\u00a0<strong>Tommi Wolst\u00a0<\/strong>in the 100 breast (54.41) and\u00a0<strong>Jared Stergar\u00a0<\/strong>in the 200 breast (2:00.79).<\/p>\n<p>But Oakland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tuomas Kiviluoma\u00a0<\/strong>lifted his team with wins in both the 200 IM (1:46.88) and 200 free (1:37.32), and teammate\u00a0<strong>Micah DeJonge\u00a0<\/strong>won both the 500 (4:29.58) and 1650 free (15:37.59). In diving, Oakland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Joe Smith\u00a0<\/strong>finished first on the 1-meter (340.60) and 3-meter (312.85) boards.<\/p>\n<p>Oakland also won both the 200 medley (1:26.47) and 800 free relays (6:32.30), and\u00a0<strong>Jeremiah Morren<\/strong> won the 50 free in 19.81. Other Oakland winners included\u00a0<strong>Patrik Lofgren\u00a0<\/strong>in the 400 IM (3:54.73) and\u00a0<strong>Alexander Danielewski<\/strong> in the 200 back (1:45.56).<\/p>\n<p>Wright State ended up capturing the 200 free relay title in 1:21.59, and the only individual winner not from either Oakland or Cleveland State was\u00a0<strong>Max Pohl<\/strong>, who won the 200 fly for Illinois-Chicago in 1:48.98.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2017-horizon-league-swimming-and-diving-championships\/ncaa-college\/2017\/February\/22\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Full results<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Oakland Golden Grizzlies swept the women&#8217;s and men&#8217;s team titles at the Horizon League Swimming Championships for a fourth consecutive season over the weekend in Chicago.
