That\u2019s how long is has been since Cal legend <\/span><b>Natalie Coughlin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blasted past the 50 second barrier to post an otherworldly American and NCAA record in the 100 backstroke. Before this weekend, no other woman had been able to crack that elusive mark, but now Stanford junior\u00a0<\/span><b>Ally Howe <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ally-howe-takes-down-15-year-old-american-and-ncaa-record-in-100-back\/\" target=\"_blank\">has added her name to the record books<\/a> and taken down Coughlin\u2019s last short course yards American record.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Performance of the Week -- March 1, 2017 -- Ally Howe\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n8M3y1trQ68?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hitting the wall in 49.69, Howe\u00a0took nearly 3-tenths off of Coughlin\u2019s long-held record on the third night of the 2017 Pac-12 Conference Championships. There had been plenty of near misses, including one from teammate <\/span><b>Janet Hu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earlier that day in prelims when she moved up to fourth all-time with a 50.29. More than a few NCAA Champions had gotten close, including Cal\u2019s own <\/span><b>Rachel Bootsma <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Virginia\u2019s <\/span><b>Courtney Bartholomew<\/b>,<b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who 50.01 from 2014 had remained the second fastest performance up until Howe\u2019s swim. But the junior was the one to finally bust through that barrier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/video-interview-ally-howe-reacts-to-her-new-american-record\/\" target=\"_blank\">knocking down a record that was set when she was just six years old<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Howe has had an impressive improvement curve since coming to Stanford, dropping about a second off her 100 backstroke each year she\u2019s been in college and finishing third in the 100 back at NCAA\u2019s last year with a 50.86. But when swimming on a team with multiple Olympians, Olympic gold medalists, and world record holders (not to mention the most dominant athlete in swimming right now, <\/span><b>Katie Ledecky<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), it takes something special to stand out. While Stanford had plenty of notable performances this week, Howe\u2019s was truly the most impressive\u00a0when considering the magnitude of the record she took down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the focus now shifting to NCAA\u2019s, Howe will enter the meet as the top seed in the 100 back by a half-second. Following her race, head coach <\/span><b>Greg Meehan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggested that Howe may have another drop in her, commenting that they rested her less for Pac-12\u2019s relative to last year.
