SANTA CLARA, California, June 18. CALIFORNIA's Dana Vollmer put together the most impressive evening during the second night of long course meter action at the USA Swimming Grand Prix held in Santa Clara.<\/p>\n
Vollmer checked in with a meet record in the women's 100 fly, and nearly jumped to the top of the world in the event with a 57.73. That time beat Natalie Coughlin's 58.22 set back in 2006, and moved Vollmer up to third in the world. Only Jiao Liuyang (57.67) and Stephanie Rice (57.71) have been faster this year, while Fran Halsall is the only other sub-58 performer with a 57.83. Stanford's Elaine Breeden touched second in 59.37, while Tucson Ford's Christine Magnusson took third in 59.92. <\/p>\n
Vollmer doubled up by capturing the women's 100 free in 54.47, just off her third-ranked season best of 54.30 from March. Palo Alto Stanford's Jasmine Tosky, 16, finished second in 55.90, while Australia's Marieke Guehrer completed the top three in 55.99. Notably, Australia's Yolane Kukla, 14, garnered fourth in 56.09.<\/p>\n
Brazil's Kaio Almeida put up a 1:56.94 to win the men's 200 fly and vault to 15th in the world. He jumped in front of Australia's Jayden Hadler (1:57.07) in the rankings. Island's Stefan Hirniak touched second in 1:59.74, while David Mosko pocketed third in 2:00.79. <\/p>\n
Keri Hehn dominated the women's 200 breast with a winning time of 2:26.93 to move to 17th overall in the world. She moved ahead of Japan's Mina Matsushima's 2:27.23. Santa Barbara's Katlin Freeman picked up second in 2:29.45, while Stanford's Liz Smith and KING's Megan Jendrick tied for third with matching 2:29.62s. <\/p>\n
Island's Alexa Komarnycky moved to 25th in the world with a 4:10.27 in the women's 400 free for the win. She pushed China's Li Mo (4:10.38) out of the top 25 with the effort. ASK's Dagny Knutson, who stands 18th in the world with a 4:09.61 from May, placed second in 4:11.28. Melania Costa Schmid completed the podium with a third-place 4:12.42. <\/p>\n
UBC Dolphin Brian Johns cruised to victory in the men's 400 IM with a time of 4:17.73. That effort fell short of his eighth-ranked season best of 4:15.54 set in April. Australia's Thomas Fraser-Holmes placed second in 4:19.13, while Athens Bulldog William Creger tied with Island's Ryan Cochrane for third with matching 4:24.44s.<\/p>\n
Auburn's Henrique Barbosa topped the men's 100 breast in 1:02.57, while Mike Alexandrov touched just behind with a second-place 1:02.66. Alexandrov's Tucson Ford teammate Marcus Titus took third in 1:03.33.<\/p>\n
Australia's Kenrick Monk emerged from a stacked finale in the men's 200 free with a 1:49.29.
