PESCARA, Italy, June 18. THE second evening of long course meter action at the Sette Colli Trophy meet in Italy featured a pair of second-ranked times going into the rankings. This just a day after top-ranked efforts were produced by Therese Alshammar and Federica Pellegrini.<\/p>\n
Hungary's Laszlo Cseh dropped the second-ranked time in the world in the men's 400 IM with a sterling 4:13.08 for the win. Only Japan's Yuya Horihata (4:12.02) has been faster so far this year. Teammate David Verraszto finished second in 4:15.48, off his seventh-ranked season best of 4:14.81 from April. Luca Angelo Dioli rounded out the podium with a third-place 4:18.49. <\/p>\n
Femke Heemskerk improved upon her second-ranked season best with a winning time of 54.19 in the women's 100 free. That time not only lowered her top time this year of 54.28, trailing only Ranomi Kromowidjojo's 53.44 from March, it also broke Fran Halsall's meet record of 54.27 from 2008. Sweden's Therese Alshammar placed second in 54.77 to move to 11th in the world, while Halsall picked up third in 54.91. Halsall already has a fourth-ranked 54.52 to her credit.<\/p>\n
Zsuzsanna Jakabos topped the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:08.80 to vault into 10th in the world rankings. Caterina Giacchetti placed second in 2:09.83 grabbing 18th overall in the world, while Denise Riccobono completed the top three in 2:11.54. Jakabos doubled up with a 4:44.17 to win the women's 400 IM going away. Stefania Pirozzi finished second in 4:46.82, while South Africa's Kathryn Meaklim earned third in 4:53.37. <\/p>\n
Great Britain's Elizabeth Simmonds claimed the women's 100 back in 1:00.15, just missing Emily Seebohm's meet record of 1:00.10 from 2008. Simmonds also fell short of her second-ranked season best of 59.43 from March. Kimberly Buys placed second in 1:02.71, while Ingvild Snildal took third in 1:02.73. <\/p>\n
Great Britain's Liam Tancock cruised to victory in the men's 100 back with a 54.82. He was well off his top-ranked time of the year of a 52.85 from March. Greece's Aristeidis Grigoriadis took second in 55.23, while Italy's Damiano Lestingi placed third in 55.67. <\/p>\n
Italy's Federica Pellegrini, who scorched the women's 400 free yesterday with a top-ranked time, managed to post an 8:28.40 to win the women's 800 free today. That effort fell short of her seventh-ranked season best of 8:27.54 from April. South Africa's Wendy Trott finished second in 8:31.73, while Martina Rita Caramignoli earned third in 8:43.42.<\/p>\n
Italy's Samuel Pizzetti won the men's 800 free in 7:55.35. He's been much quicker this season with a top-ranked effort of 7:51.42 in April. Federico Colbertaldo finished second in 7:56.82, while Andrea Busato took third in 8:01.16.<\/p>\n
South Africa's Chad Le Clos won the men's 200 fly in 1:58.3, while Francesco Vespe touched second in 1:59.45. Francesco Pavone wound up third overall in 1:59.67. Gianluca Maglia won the men's 200 free in 1:48.87, while Emiliano Brembilla placed second in 1:49.78. Michele Berardi pocketed third in 1:50.55. <\/p>\n
Kim Janssens captured the women's 50 breast title in 32.06, while Martina Carraro finished second in 32.30. Chiara Boggiatto claimed third in 32.66. South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh followed with a touch-out triumph over Fabio Scozzolil, 27.82 to 27.86, in the men's 50 breast.
