Through two nights of action at the men’s ACC championships in Atlanta, the North Carolina State Wolfpack have won every swimming event contested. After winning both the 200 medley and 800 free relays on day one, the Wolfpack won the meet’s first three individual events of the meet and took the 200 free relay for a fourth straight year.<\/p>\n

Among the highlights of the night, NC State’s\u00a0Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Ryan Held<\/strong> each set conference records, and the Wolfpack have already accumulated 471 points. Louisville stands second with 402.5, followed by Virginia Tech (384), Notre Dame (365.5) and Florida State (337).<\/p>\n

500 free<\/h3>\n

NC State’s\u00a0Anton Ipsen\u00a0<\/strong>won the first individual event of the meet for the third straight year, but he had to work for this one as UNC’s\u00a0Henry Campbell<\/strong>\u00a0went stroke-for-stroke with the Olympian from Denmark for the entire distance. Even with a furious sprint on the final 50 (24.57), Ipsen could not shake Campbell, who finished with the exact same final split.<\/p>\n

But Ipsen managed to throw his hand onto the wall 0.19 ahead of his Tar Heel rival, 4:11.92 to 4:12.11. Ipsen’s time was good for No. 4 in the country this season, while Campbell’s time ranks him in a tie for seventh. Rounding out the podium was Ipsen’s NC State teammate\u00a0Adam Linker<\/strong>, who finished in 4:13.93.<\/p>\n

UNC’s\u00a0Jorden Merrilees<\/strong> touched fourth in 4:16.55, and he was followed by Louisville teammates\u00a0Zach Harting\u00a0<\/strong>(4:16.67) and\u00a0Marcelo Acosta<\/strong> (4:16.68). Also making the final were Virginia’s\u00a0Sam Magnan<\/strong> (4:17.36) and Pitt’s\u00a0Aaron Sett\u00a0<\/strong>(4:22.61).<\/p>\n

NC State’s\u00a0Andreas Vazaios<\/strong> blasted a 24.56 backstroke split\u2014by far the fastest in the field\u2014to pull ahead of everyone else in the heat, and he kept Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Brandon Fiala<\/strong> at bay on the breaststroke leg before pulling away on the free. Vazaios finished in 1:41.25 to post the top time in the country, one one-hundredth of the 1:41.26 posted by Georgia’s\u00a0Chase Kalisz\u00a0<\/strong>in December.<\/p>\n
The time also crushed\u00a0Pavel Sankovich’s\u00a0<\/strong>ACC conference and meet record of 1:41.92 set in 2014. Vazaios had been just off that mark in prelims with his time of 1:41.94.<\/p>\n
Fiala, last year’s ACC champion in the event, finished second in 1:42.09, just holding off NC State’s\u00a0Soeren Dahl<\/strong>, who touched in 1:42.26. Another Wolfpack swimmer,\u00a0Justin Ress<\/strong>, touched fifth in 1:43.44.<\/p>\n
UNC’s\u00a0Michael Meyer\u00a0<\/strong>finished fifth in 1:44.00, while VT’s\u00a0Robert Owen<\/strong>, the 2016 ACC champion in the 400 IM, touched sixth in 1:44.63. Another Hokie,\u00a0Norbert Szabo<\/strong>, finished seventh in 1:44.80, and FSU’s\u00a0Jason Coombs<\/strong> took eighth in 1:45.05.<\/p>\n

Even sporting a full beard, NC State’s\u00a0Ryan Held<\/strong> won the shortest race on the program by a full bodylength and seven tenths of a second, finishing in 18.68. The time breaks the ACC record of 18.76 set by former teammate\u00a0Simonas Bilis<\/strong>\u00a0last season and ranks No. 2 in the country this year behind Caeleb Dressel’s\u00a0<\/strong>18.46.<\/p>\n
Held also improved to seventh all-time in the event, and the only two Americans that have ever been quicker are Dressel and\u00a0Nathan Adrian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
While Held won the race by seven tenths, the next six finishers were split by only seven one-hundredths. Notre Dame’s\u00a0Justin Plaschka<\/strong> came out on top of that pack with his time of 19.38, just one one-hundredth ahead of Florida State’s\u00a0Chad Mylin\u00a0<\/strong>(19.40).<\/p>\n
Just one one-hundredth back from Mylin was Louisville’s\u00a0Trevor Carroll<\/strong> (19.40), and another one-hundredth behind was FSU’s\u00a0Jason McCormick<\/strong> (19.41). Two one-hundredths split the next two finishers: Notre Dame’s\u00a0Daniel Speers\u00a0<\/strong>(19.43) and NC State’s\u00a0Andreas Schiellerup<\/strong> (19.45). Rounding out the field was Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Ian Ho<\/strong> (19.71).<\/p>\n

North Carolina State got a big lead from\u00a0Ryan Held<\/strong> (18.90) on the leadoff leg,\u00a0Justin Ress <\/strong>(18.86)\u00a0and\u00a0Joe Bonk\u00a0<\/strong>(19.34)\u00a0maintained the lead, and\u00a0Andreas Schiellerup<\/strong>\u00a0(19.17) pulled away on the anchor leg. The Wolfpack touched in 1:16.27, surviving a challenge from the upstart Florida State team that ended up settling for second in 1:16.84.<\/p>\n
The Seminoles’ foursome of\u00a0Jason McCormick<\/strong>, Chad Mylin<\/strong>,\u00a0Emir Muratovic<\/strong> and\u00a0William Pisani<\/strong> was followed in third place by Notre Dame’s squad of\u00a0Justin Plaschka<\/strong>,\u00a0Daniel Speers<\/strong>,\u00a0Tabahn Afrik<\/strong> and\u00a0Reed Fujan<\/strong>. The Irish posted a time of 1:17.37.<\/p>\n
Also finishing among the top eight were Louisville (1:18.12), Virginia (1:18.45), Virginia Tech (1:18.69), Duke (1:19.01) and Georgia Tech (1:19.79).<\/p>\n
