After winning both the 200 medley and 800 free relays on day one, the Wolfpack won the meet&#8217;s first three individual events of the meet and took the 200 free relay for a fourth straight year.<\/p>\n<p>Among the highlights of the night, NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Ryan Held<\/strong> each set conference records, and the Wolfpack have already accumulated 471 points. Louisville stands second with 402.5, followed by Virginia Tech (384), Notre Dame (365.5) and Florida State (337).<\/p>\n<h3>500 free<\/h3>\n<p>NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Anton Ipsen\u00a0<\/strong>won the first individual event of the meet for the third straight year, but he had to work for this one as UNC&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Henry Campbell<\/strong>\u00a0went stroke-for-stroke with the Olympian from Denmark for the entire distance. Even with a furious sprint on the final 50 (24.57), Ipsen could not shake Campbell, who finished with the exact same final split.<\/p>\n<p>But Ipsen managed to throw his hand onto the wall 0.19 ahead of his Tar Heel rival, 4:11.92 to 4:12.11. Ipsen&#8217;s time was good for No. 4 in the country this season, while Campbell&#8217;s time ranks him in a tie for seventh. Rounding out the podium was Ipsen&#8217;s NC State teammate\u00a0<strong>Adam Linker<\/strong>, who finished in 4:13.93.<\/p>\n<p>UNC&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jorden Merrilees<\/strong> touched fourth in 4:16.55, and he was followed by Louisville teammates\u00a0<strong>Zach Harting\u00a0<\/strong>(4:16.67) and\u00a0<strong>Marcelo Acosta<\/strong> (4:16.68). Vazaios finished in 1:41.25 to post the top time in the country, one one-hundredth of the 1:41.26 posted by Georgia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chase Kalisz\u00a0<\/strong>in December.<\/p>\n<p>The time also crushed\u00a0<strong>Pavel Sankovich&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>ACC conference and meet record of 1:41.92 set in 2014. Vazaios had been just off that mark in prelims with his time of 1:41.94.<\/p>\n<p>Fiala, last year&#8217;s ACC champion in the event, finished second in 1:42.09, just holding off NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Soeren Dahl<\/strong>, who touched in 1:42.26. Another Wolfpack swimmer,\u00a0<strong>Justin Ress<\/strong>, touched fifth in 1:43.44.<\/p>\n<p>UNC&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michael Meyer\u00a0<\/strong>finished fifth in 1:44.00, while VT&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Robert Owen<\/strong>, the 2016 ACC champion in the 400 IM, touched sixth in 1:44.63. The time breaks the ACC record of 18.76 set by former teammate\u00a0<strong>Simonas Bilis<\/strong>\u00a0last season and ranks No. 2 in the country this year behind <strong>Caeleb Dressel&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>18.46.<\/p>\n<p>Held also improved to seventh all-time in the event, and the only two Americans that have ever been quicker are Dressel and\u00a0<strong>Nathan Adrian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While Held won the race by seven tenths, the next six finishers were split by only seven one-hundredths. Notre Dame&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Justin Plaschka<\/strong> came out on top of that pack with his time of 19.38, just one one-hundredth ahead of Florida State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chad Mylin\u00a0<\/strong>(19.40).<\/p>\n<p>Just one one-hundredth back from Mylin was Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Trevor Carroll<\/strong> (19.40), and another one-hundredth behind was FSU&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jason McCormick<\/strong> (19.41). Two one-hundredths split the next two finishers: Notre Dame&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniel Speers\u00a0<\/strong>(19.43) and NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andreas Schiellerup<\/strong> (19.45). The Wolfpack touched in 1:16.27, surviving a challenge from the upstart Florida State team that ended up settling for second in 1:16.84.<\/p>\n<p>The Seminoles&#8217; foursome of\u00a0<strong>Jason McCormick<\/strong>,<strong> Chad Mylin<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Emir Muratovic<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>William Pisani<\/strong> was followed in third place by Notre Dame&#8217;s squad of\u00a0<strong>Justin Plaschka<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Daniel Speers<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Tabahn Afrik<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Reed Fujan<\/strong>.
