The first prelims session of the 2017 men’s ACC championships featured action in the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free. NC State posted a strong effort in the heats, as in all three events Wolfpack swimmers claimed two of the top three qualifying spots for Tuesday night’s finals.<\/p>\n

The highlight came in the 50 free, where\u00a0Ryan Held<\/strong> took down the ACC championship record in the event.<\/p>\n

North Carolina got off to a rough start at the men’s ACC championships when the Tar Heels were disqualified in the 200 medley relay, but they got back on track in the 500 free as\u00a0Henry Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>dropped more than seven seconds from his seed time to top prelims in 4:14.20.<\/p>\n

Campbell will have tough competition on either side of him in the finals as NC State’s\u00a0Adam Linker\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Anton Ipsen<\/strong> qualified second and third, respectively. Linker finished in 4:14.52, while Ipsen, the defending champion, posted a time of 4:14.83 to fall just short of his season best of 4:13.40.<\/p>\n

Louisville’s\u00a0Marcelo Acosta<\/strong> was fourth in 4:14.93, and Virginia’s\u00a0Sam Magnan<\/strong>\u00a0took fifth in 4:17.94. Louisville got a second swimmer into the top heat with sixth-place finisher\u00a0Zach Harting<\/strong> (4:18.28), and he was followed by Pittsburgh’s\u00a0Aaron Sett\u00a0<\/strong>(4:18.29) and North Carolina’s\u00a0Jorden Merrilees<\/strong> (4:18.47).<\/p>\n

NC State finished 1-2-4 in the 200 IM, led\u00a0Andreas Vazaios<\/strong>, who\u00a0topped the field in 1:41.94, the fifth-fastest mark in the country this season.\u00a0Soeren Dahl<\/strong> finished second in 1:42.32, good for No. 7 nationally, and\u00a0Justin Ress<\/strong> took fourth in 1:43.23.<\/p>\n
Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Brandon Fiala<\/strong> picked up the third seed with a time of 1:42.59, and the defending ACC champion in the event looks to be in strong form after opening the meet with a blistering 23.02 breaststroke split on the Hokies’ fourth place 200 medley elay.<\/p>\n
UNC’s\u00a0Michael Meyer\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed fifth in 1:43.88, and Florida State’s\u00a0Jason Coombs<\/strong> touched sixth in 1:44.03. Two more Hokie swimmers got into the final as the last two qualifiers,\u00a0Robert Owen\u00a0<\/strong>(1:44.30) and\u00a0Norbert Szabo<\/strong> (1:44.34).<\/p>\n

Held then rounded out the morning with a quick time of 18.77 in the 50 free. The time is a new ACC championships record and is just one one-hundredth off Simonas Bilis’ <\/strong>conference record of 18.76. Held now\u00a0ranks behind only\u00a0Caeleb Dressel\u00a0<\/strong>(18.46) and\u00a0Joseph Schooling\u00a0<\/strong>(18.76) in the country this season, and on the all-time list, his time ranks 11th.<\/p>\n
NC State finished 1-2 in the event as\u00a0Andreas Schiellerup<\/strong> qualified second in 19.44, just ahead of\u00a0Notre Dame’s\u00a0Daniel Speers<\/strong> and Florida State’s\u00a0Chad Mylin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
Speers and Mylin will each have a teammate join them in the final as Notre Dame’s\u00a0Justin Plaschka<\/strong> finished fifth in 19.54, and FSU’s\u00a0Jason McCormick<\/strong> took seventh in 19.59. Also making the final were Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Ian Ho<\/strong> (19.58) and Louisville’s\u00a0Trevor Carroll<\/strong> (19.61).<\/p>\n
