Stanford’s\u00a0Ally Howe<\/strong> took down a 15-year-old American and NCAA record Friday night at the women’s Pac-12 championships. Howe blasted a time of 49.69 in the women’s 100 back to knock\u00a0Natalie Coughlin’s\u00a0<\/strong>49.97 off the books.<\/p>\n

Coughlin had set that record in 2002 on her way to the second of four straight NCAA championships in that event. The record was Coughlin’s last in the short course yards’ pool.<\/p>\n

Howe became only the second woman in history to break the 50-second barrier after\u00a0Courtney Bartholomew\u00a0<\/strong>(50.01) and\u00a0Rachel Bootsma<\/strong> (50.03) came close multiple times over their careers.<\/p>\n
