The St. Xavier boys collected their 29th straight Kentucky high school state title on Saturday afternoon. The team was powered by three relay wins and a number of strong individual performances.<\/p>\n

St. Xavier started the finals session by lowering their own state record in the 200 medley relay.\u00a0Martin Kitzken<\/strong>,\u00a0Keefer Barnum<\/strong>,\u00a0Conner Kang<\/strong>, and\u00a0Michael Eastman\u00a0<\/strong>clocked a 1:32.31, just .03 faster than last year’s quartet went.<\/p>\n

Lex. Catholic’s\u00a0Matt Menke<\/strong>,\u00a0Thomas Strother<\/strong>,\u00a0Zach Hils<\/strong>, and\u00a0Scott Scanlon\u00a0<\/strong>claimed silver (1:33.48). Bowling Green completed the podium with the team of\u00a0Neal Morsi<\/strong>,\u00a0Hunter Eaton<\/strong>,\u00a0Garrett Strickler<\/strong>, and\u00a0Dylan Taylor\u00a0<\/strong>going a 1:36.55.<\/p>\n

Aldan Johnston\u00a0<\/strong>then made it two for two for St. Xavier for event wins and state records. The junior posted a 1:36.89 in the 200 freestyle. The old mark was a 1:37.93 swum in 2013 by\u00a0Max Williamson\u00a0<\/strong>of Cov. Catholic. Cov. Catholic’s\u00a0Nick Smith\u00a0<\/strong>was second in 1:38.29. Johnston’s teammate\u00a0Cole Brown\u00a0<\/strong>picked up bronze in 1:40.95.<\/p>\n

Hils then improved on his top seeded time and removed\u00a0Williamson’s name from another record. Hils touched in 1:48.83 to win the 200 IM and slide under Williamson’s 1:48.88 swum in 2012. St. Xavier teammates Barnum (1:50.52) and Nitzken (1:53.37) rounded out the podium.<\/p>\n

Trinity’s\u00a0Hunter Tap\u00a0<\/strong>led a tight trio in the 50 freestyle. The sophomore won the splash and dash in 20.60. Second went to North Oldham’s\u00a0William Tarvest\u00a0<\/strong>(20.63) and Eastman secured third (20.84).<\/p>\n

Holy Cross’\u00a0Gus Staubitz\u00a0<\/strong>dominated the one meter diving event with 432.90 points. Highlands’\u00a0Finn Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>was second (289.35) and Bowling Green’s\u00a0Conner Twyman\u00a0<\/strong>(385.40) finished third.<\/p>\n
Christian Academy’s\u00a0Nicolas Albiero\u00a0<\/strong>then finally got his chance to race. The senior lowered his own 100 butterfly state record with a 46.29 to win the event by over four seconds. Ky. Country Day’s\u00a0Misha Semenov\u00a0<\/strong>was runner up (50.73) while Brown (51.21) placed third.<\/p>\n

Tapp swept the sprint freestyle events, taking the 100 in record fashion. Tapp was a 44.65, just faster than\u00a0Thomas Cooper<\/strong>‘s 44.71. Cooper also swam for Trinity. Tarvest was again second, only a tenth from the record. Hils finished third (45.00). That is a sophomore trio, set up for two more years of tight racing.<\/p>\n

Johnston made it two individual victories today, adding 500 freestyle gold to his 200 win. the St. Xavier junior touched in 4:25.73 to win the event ahead of Cov. Catholic’s Smith (4:27.76) who claimed his second silver of the afternoon. Paul Dunbar’s\u00a0Chase Mattingly\u00a0<\/strong>was third (4:34.69).<\/p>\n

St. Xavier picked up another relay victory. The team of Johnston,\u00a0Will Cole<\/strong>,\u00a0Jack Harty<\/strong>, and\u00a0Dominic Tomchek\u00a0<\/strong>touched in 1:25.05 for the 200 freestyle relay win. Cov. Catholic’s\u00a0Matt Elsbernd<\/strong>,\u00a0Patrick Merse<\/strong>,\u00a0Ethan Hanna<\/strong>, and\u00a0Nick Smith\u00a0<\/strong>were second (1:26.86) while Trinity’s\u00a0Luke Bunnell<\/strong>,\u00a0Cameron Gantt<\/strong>,\u00a0Jacob Bibeau<\/strong>, and Tapp placed third (1:27.13).<\/p>\n
