The third day of the 2017 Men’s B1G Swimming & Diving Championships were highlighted by a pair of B1G Conference and Championship records in the men’s 100 breast and 100 back.<\/p>\n

Indiana’s\u00a0Ian Finnerty<\/strong> slid past Olympian\u00a0Cody Miller’s\u00a0<\/strong>B1G record in the 100 breast, while Penn State’s\u00a0Shane Ryan\u00a0<\/strong>soared past Ohio State’s\u00a0Matt McHugh<\/strong>\u00a0to become the newest conference champion and record holder.<\/p>\n

    100 Fly<\/h3>\n

    Ohio State senior\u00a0Matt McHugh<\/strong> claimed the gold in the men’s 100 fly final, stopping the clock at a 44.91 to be the only swimmer underneath the 45-second mark.<\/p>\n

    Indiana’s\u00a0Vinicius Lanza\u00a0<\/strong>picked up second overall with a time of 45.07, followed by Wisconsin’s\u00a0Cannon Clifton\u00a0<\/strong>and his time of 45.81.<\/p>\n

    Michigan’s\u00a0Evan White<\/strong> finished fourth overall with a time of 46.05, while Ohio State’s\u00a0Noah Lense<\/strong> was fifth with a 46.28.<\/p>\n

    Michigan’s\u00a0Miles Smachlo<\/strong> (46.43),\u00a0Iowa’s\u00a0Jerry Twarowski<\/strong> (46.78), and Minnesota’s\u00a0Tuomas Pokkinen<\/strong> (47.02) were sixth through eighth respectively.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0400 IM<\/h3>\n
    Charles Swanson\u00a0<\/strong>of Michigan swam ahead of the competition in finals of the men’s 400 IM. Swanson turned in a 3:41.13 to claim first and lower his prelims time by close to four seconds.<\/p>\n
    Picking up second was Minnesota’s\u00a0Jakub Maly<\/strong> with a final time of 3:44.41, while third went to Ohio State’s\u00a0Ching Lim<\/strong> (3:46.89).<\/p>\n
    Joshua Brooks<\/strong> of Purdue finished fourth overall with a 3:47.58, followed closely by the Michigan duo of\u00a0Cameron Stitt<\/strong> (3:47.72) and\u00a0Patrick\u00a0<\/strong>Hansford<\/b> (3:47.79).<\/p>\n
    Purdue’s\u00a0Adam Noens<\/strong> took seventh with a 3:48.17 and Michigan’s\u00a0Stephen\u00a0<\/strong>Holmqvist<\/b> was eighth with a 3:48.21.<\/p>\n
    200 Free<\/h3>\n
    Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>of Indiana uncorked a 1:32.13 in finals of the men’s 200 free, improving upon his prelims time of 1:33.72.<\/p>\n
    It was a tight race Ohio State’s\u00a0Joshua Fleagle<\/strong> and Michigan’s\u00a0Felix Auboeck<\/strong> as the two dueled for second. Fleagle touched first with a 1:33.25, followed closely by Auboeck’s\u00a01:33.27.<\/p>\n
    Brett Pinfold\u00a0<\/strong>of Wisconsin finished fourth overall with a time of 1:33.85, followed by the Hoosier duo of\u00a0Mohamed Samy\u00a0<\/strong>(1:34.05) and\u00a0Jackson Miller<\/strong> (1:34.14).<\/p>\n
    Wisconsin’s\u00a0Matthew Hutchins<\/strong> and Indiana’s\u00a0Marwin El Kamash\u00a0<\/strong>completed the top eight with times of 1:35.32 and 1:35.86 respectively.<\/p>\n

    100 Breast<\/h3>\n
    Indiana claimed another individual victory in finals of the 100 breast as\u00a0Ian\u00a0<\/strong>Finnerty\u00a0<\/b>powered to the only sub-52 second finish. Finnerty stopped the clock at a 51.38 for the win, scraping .67 seconds off his prelims time of 52.05. Finnerty’s time not only downed the Indiana school record, but it also took down the B1G Conference and Championship meet records. The previous B1G record was a 51.50 set by\u00a0Cody Miller<\/strong> in 2013.<\/p>\n
    Michigan’s\u00a0Jacob Montague<\/strong> took second overall with a 52.08, while the bronze medal was picked up by Ohio State’s\u00a0Jack Barone<\/strong> and his time of 52.26.<\/p>\n
    The Minnesota duo of\u00a0Conner McHugh<\/strong> and\u00a0Eric Sande<\/strong> posted close times of 52.44 and 52.52 for fourth and fifth respectively, while Indiana’s\u00a0Levi Brock<\/strong> was sixth with a 52.91.<\/p>\n
    Christopher Klein<\/strong> of Michigan and\u00a0Gunther Cassell\u00a0<\/strong>of Penn State grabbed seventh and eighth with times of 53.08 and 54.38 respectively.<\/p>\n
    100 Back<\/h3>\n
    Shane Ryan<\/strong> of Penn delivered a dominating performance in finals of the men’s 100 back. Ryan finished close to a full second ahead of the competition in B1G Conference and Championship meet record style. His time of 44.65 slides past\u00a0Matt McHugh’s<\/strong> previous record of 45.07, set at last year’s championships.<\/p>\n
    Picking up second was Ohio State’s\u00a0Matt McHugh\u00a0<\/strong>with a final time of 45.52, while Indiana’s\u00a0Robert Glover<\/strong> took third with a 46.45.<\/p>\n
    Thomas Trace<\/strong> of Ohio State added a fourth place finish of 46.53, followed closely by Michigan’s\u00a0Tristan Sanders<\/strong> (46.61).<\/p>\n
    Michigan’s\u00a0Luke Papendick<\/strong> (47.08), Ohio State’s\u00a0Andrew Appleby<\/strong> (47.30), and Ohio State’s\u00a0Mark Belanger<\/strong> (47.53) were sixth through eighth respectively.<\/p>\n
    3-Meter Diving<\/h3>\n
    Michael Hixon<\/strong> of Indiana took home the title in the men’s 3-meter diving, gathering a final score of 520.40.<\/p>\n
    Ohio State’s\u00a0Collin Zeng<\/strong> picked up second with a score of 510.30, while Purdue’s\u00a0Steele Johnson\u00a0<\/strong>finished third with 506.45.<\/p>\n
    Hector Boissier<\/strong> of Penn State grabbed fourth with a total of 465.85, followed by Indiana’s\u00a0James Connor’s\u00a0<\/strong>455.95.<\/p>\n
    Purdue’s\u00a0Joseph Cifelli<\/strong> (452.55) was sixth, just ahead of the Ohio State duo of\u00a0Christopher Law<\/strong> (431.75) and\u00a0Stephen Romanik<\/strong> (346.15).<\/p>\n
    200 Free Relay<\/h3>\n
    The 200 free relay final came down to a title battle between the first and second and the third and fourth place teams. Dueling for the title were the relay teams from Ohio State and Indiana, finishing .11 seconds apart.<\/p>\n
    Ohio State’s\u00a0Massimo Chavez<\/strong> (19.59),\u00a0Matt McHugh<\/strong> (18.85),\u00a0Joshua Fleagle<\/strong> (19.00), and\u00a0Thomas Trace<\/strong> (19.17) posted a combined time of 1:16.61 to claim the victory over the rest of the field.<\/p>\n
    Indiana’s\u00a0Ali Khalafalla<\/strong> (19.15),\u00a0Blake Pieroni<\/strong> (18.93),\u00a0Anze Tavcar<\/strong> (19.33), and\u00a0Samuel Lorentz<\/strong> (19.31) settled for second and a final time of 1:16.72.<\/p>\n
    Paul Powers<\/strong> (18.98),\u00a0James William Jones<\/strong> (19.18),\u00a0Vincent Tafuto<\/strong> (19.54), and\u00a0Luke Papendick<\/strong> (19.88) of Michigan held off a charging Minnesota relay to pick up third with a time of 1:17.58.<\/p>\n
    Minnesota’s\u00a0Bowen Becker<\/strong> (19.25),\u00a0Paul Fair<\/strong> (19.48),\u00a0Daryl Turner<\/strong> (19.64), and\u00a0Tuomas Pokkinen<\/strong> (19.31) posted a fourth place finish of 1:17.68.<\/p>\n
    Iowa finished fifth overall with a 1:18.13, followed by Wisconsin’s 1:18.47.<\/p>\n
    Penn State and Purdue rounded out the top eight with times of 1:19.00 and 1:19.64 respectively.<\/p>\n
