The top effort came from junior\u00a0<strong>Janet Hu<\/strong>, who posted the top times in the country in both the 100 fly and 100 back.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford claimed the top four spots in the prelims of the prelims of the 400 IM, and it was a familiar name claiming the top spot. Less than 17 hours after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-takes-down-american-and-ncaa-records-in-500-free\/\" target=\"_blank\">setting the American record in the 500 free<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>was back in the water for the 400 IM. In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-to-swim-400-im-and-200-free-at-pac-12s-out-of-1650\/\" target=\"_blank\">first of two swims in the morning session<\/a>, Ledecky finished in 4:01.92, just off her season and lifetime best time of 4:00.65 that ranks second in the country this season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Allie Szekely<\/strong>, another Stanford freshman, won her heat in 4:02.70, improving to fifth in the country this season, while reigning Pac-12 and NCAA champion\u00a0<strong>Ella Eastin<\/strong> cruised to the third seed with her time of 4:03.13. Finally, Stanford&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Leah Stevens\u00a0<\/strong>claimed the fourth seed in the event with her time of 4:09.21.<\/p>\n<p>Just behind Stevens was Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Celina Li<\/strong>, who qualifed fifth in 4:09.29. After\u00a0<strong>Louise Hansson<\/strong> blasted a 50.70 in heat 4\u00a0(then the No. 3 time in the country), Stanford&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Janet Hu\u00a0<\/strong>responded with a 50.38 to lead the heat 5, passing\u00a0Indiana&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gia Dalesandro\u00a0<\/strong>(50.45) as the top swimmer in the country this season.<\/p>\n<p>One heat later, Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Noemie Thomas<\/strong> responded with a 50.44 to earn lane five for the final. Hansson&#8217;s time held up as the No. 3 time headed into the evening session.<\/p>\n<p>Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Farida Osman<\/strong> swam a quick time of 51.32 to finish fourth, and she was followed by Stanford&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lindsey Engel<\/strong> in 51.77. That time moved Manuel back ahead of\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(1:41.70) as the top time in the country so far this season. But Manuel figures to have a tough challenger in the finals tonight as Ledecky qualified second in 1:42.69.<\/p>\n<p>A third Stanford swimmer picked up lane three for the final as\u00a0<strong>Lia Neal<\/strong> qualified in 1:44.15, while Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Katie McLaughlin<\/strong> came in fourth at 1:44.42. That was well under her top time from the dual meet season, a 1:00.47, and the fifth-fastest time in the country this season.<\/p>\n<p>USC teammates\u00a0<strong>Riley Scott\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Kirsten Vose\u00a0<\/strong>were the only other two athletes under 1:00 in prelims, with times of 59.26 and 59.88, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kim Williams\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fourth in 1:00.30, followed by Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marina Garcia<\/strong> in 1:00.46. Both times were\u00a0well under\u00a0<strong>Olivia Smoliga&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>50.60 that had been the top time in the country this season, and the duo now ranks fourth and seventh all-time, respectively, in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Also moving into the national top five this season were UCLA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Linnea Mack<\/strong>, who touched in 50.76, and Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kathleen Baker<\/strong>, the Olympic silver medalist in the event who came in at 50.80.
