Pereira took the lead early and did not relinquish it to finish at 4:47.45. She pulled along her freshman teammate Megan Bowen to second with a 4:49.52. Pereira had paid the price for a blistering first half but ended up holding on for the win. Bowen also had a bit of a race with Rice’s Hanna Huston as Bowen held off Huston who finished at 4:49.90 for third.

The only pool event that Florida International did not win was the 200 IM. Marshall freshman Catherine Bendziewicz had a stellar freestyle leg with a 28.34 split as the only swimmer under 29. Bendziewicz touched in 1:59.29 ahead of early leader Jaecey Parham of Rice at 1:59.92. It was a very tight race amongst the top four as Sarah Vaisse of North Texas was third at 2:00.01 and Carita Luukkanen of Florida International was third at 2:01.46.
