Prelims for day two of the 2017 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships set up one of the weekend’s first potential historical wins. Texas senior\u00a0Madisyn Cox\u00a0<\/strong>qualified for the 200 IM well ahead of the field, setting her up to be the first woman to four-peat the 200 IM in the history of the Big 12 Conference. Teammate\u00a0Tasija Karosas<\/strong> will look to four-peat the 200 back later in the meet.<\/p>\n

On the men’s side,\u00a0Clark Smith<\/strong> and\u00a0Townley Haas\u00a0<\/strong>set themselves up for a battle in the 500 free as Smith tries to re-claim the title from Haas.<\/p>\n

DAY TWO PRELIMS RESULTS<\/a><\/p>\n

Women’s 500 Free (Prelims):<\/h3>\n

Texas swept the top three spots in prelims of the women’s 500 free. The Longhorn charge was led by\u00a0Joanna Evans<\/strong>, a sophomore, with a qualifying time of 4:42.07. Teammates\u00a0Lauren Case\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Quinn Carrozza<\/strong> posted similar times of 4:45.73 and 4:45.95 to return as the second and third place seeds respectively.<\/p>\n

West Virginia senior\u00a0Emma Skelley\u00a0<\/strong>picked up the fourth place seed for finals with a time of 4:46.54, improving upon her entry time of 4:47.54, while Kansas’\u00a0Jenny Nusbaum<\/strong> turned in a 4:49.84 for fifth.<\/p>\n

Iowa State’s\u00a0Keely Soellner<\/strong> (4:50.12), Texas’\u00a0Maggie D’Innocenzo<\/strong> (4:50.82), and Iowa State’s\u00a0Haley Ruegemer<\/strong> (4:50.97) qualified sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Texas senior\u00a0Clark Smith<\/strong> and sophomore\u00a0Jeff Newkirk\u00a0<\/strong>turned in similar times to qualify 1-2 for tonight’s final. Smith stopped the clock at a 4:16.31 over Newkirk’s 4:16.88 for the top seed, but has been as fast as a 4:11.20 this season. Newkirk’s time stands as a personal best by close to three seconds.<\/p>\n
Fellow Longhorn and last year’s champion,\u00a0Townley Haas,\u00a0<\/strong>picked up the third place seed with a 4:22.21, followed by\u00a0Jonathan Roberts<\/strong> and his time of 4:24.34.<\/p>\n
TCU’s\u00a0Dayne Odendaal\u00a0<\/strong>threw his name in the finals heat with a 4:27.19 qualifying time, while West Virginia’s\u00a0Trayton Saladin\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Drew Damich\u00a0<\/strong>qualified with times of 4:27.56 and 4:27.78 respectively.<\/p>\n

Teammate\u00a0Nora McCullagh\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 1:59.47 for the second place seed, while TCU’s\u00a0Devin Newton<\/strong> qualified third overall with a 2:01.15.<\/p>\n
West Virginia’s\u00a0Morgan Bullock\u00a0<\/strong>made her Big 12 individual debut with a 2:01.46 in prelims, good for the fourth place seed, just ahead of freshman\u00a0Elise Forzley<\/strong> of TCU and her time of 2:01.70.<\/p>\n
Kansas’\u00a0Haley Downey<\/strong> (2:02.96), TCU\u00a0Alexandra Robertson\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.98), and Kansas’\u00a0Pia Pavlic\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.99) completed the top qualifiers.<\/p>\n

A trio of Longhorns led the men’s 200 IM qualifiers with\u00a0John Shebat\u00a0<\/strong>touching first with a 1:43.35. He’ll be joined in the middle of the pool by teammates\u00a0Sam Stewart<\/strong> (1:45.15) and\u00a0Will Licon\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.64).<\/p>\n
Josh Artmann<\/strong>, also representing Texas, turned in a 1:47.42, good for the fifth place seed, while TCU’s\u00a0Carlos Hunnicutt\u00a0<\/strong>took the seventh place seed with a 1:49.23.<\/p>\n
Texas’\u00a0Mason Tenney<\/strong> (1:46.93),\u00a0Jared Butler<\/strong> (1:48.54), and\u00a0Hayden Henry<\/strong> (1:49.24) all swam the event as exhibition.<\/p>\n

Teammate\u00a0Jack Conger\u00a0<\/strong>qualified close behind with a time of 19.20, while sophomore\u00a0Tate Jackson\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed third with a 19.62.<\/p>\n
West Virginia’s\u00a0Merwane Elmerini\u00a0<\/strong>took the fourth place seed with a time of 19.75, followed by Texas’\u00a0Brett Ringgold<\/strong> (19.78) and\u00a0PJ Dunne\u00a0<\/strong>(19.84).<\/p>\n
