This was the first state championship for the young team, in only their fourth year competing. Their defending champion boys finished second by a mere two and a half points to Grace Christian.<\/p>\n<p>Christ the King opened the meet in state record time as\u00a0<strong>Annie Donahue<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jane Donahue<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Amanda Hoffman<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Jordan Lamoreux\u00a0<\/strong>posted a dominating 1:48.85 in the 200 medley relay. The same quartet also ended the meet with a state record time of 3:35.65 in the 400 freestyle relay.<\/p>\n<p>Jane Donahue led the team, setting two more state records. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nittany-lions-add-breaststroker-jane-donahue-to-class-of-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Penn State commit<\/a> stopped the clock in 2:05.69 to dominate the 200 IM. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.61.\u00a0<strong>Maddie Smith\u00a0<\/strong>of Caldwell Academy was second (1:04.33).<\/p>\n<p>Jane&#8217;s freshman sister Annie picked up two bronze medals. She finished in 1:03.30 in the 100 butterfly. Their teammate\u00a0Hoffman won the event in 57.72. St. David&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Annie Mears\u00a0<\/strong>finished second (1:01.95). Annie Donahue and freshman teammate Lamoreux went 2-3 in the 100 backstroke in times of 1:00.86 and 1:01.90. The O&#8217;Neal School&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Henry\u00a0<\/strong>set a state record in that event with a 57.44.<\/p>\n<p>Henry finished third in the 50 freestyle (24.61). That event was won by Smith (23.88). Sandwhiched between the two was Rocky Mount Academy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kayla Miller\u00a0<\/strong>(24.38). Miller then won the 100 freestyle in 53.12, out touching Carolina Day School&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Madeleine Bauer\u00a0<\/strong>(53.13). O&#8217;Neal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hannah Burns\u00a0<\/strong>(53.56) was third. Bauer won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.72. Her eighth grade sister\u00a0<strong>Katie\u00a0<\/strong>touched second (1:58.82), just faster than Burns (1:58.98).<\/p>\n<p>Carolina Day&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Olivia Sutter\u00a0<\/strong>won the 500 freestyle by nearly 10 seconds with a 5:05.53. Hoffman was runner up (5:14.60). Katie Bauer\u00a0completed the podium (5:17.97).<\/p>\n<p>St. David&#8217;s&#8217; Mears,\u00a0<strong>Madeline Ross<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sarah Spencer Ball<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Mary Jeanne Hipp\u00a0<\/strong>were victorious in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:43.61.<\/p>\n<p>Following their female teammates, Christ the King&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Alex Adams<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ben Duckworth<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alex Koenigsberger<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Keenan Burgess\u00a0<\/strong>also started the meet with a state record, stopping the clock in 1:39.28 in the 200 medley relay. Adams was victorious individually with a 52.08 100 butterfly, just faster than Statesville Christian&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ethan Raub\u00a0<\/strong>(52.16). Duckworth added an individual title with his minute breaking 59.52 in the 100 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>Cary Christian&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>CJ Van Vooren\u00a0<\/strong>won the 200 freestyle in 1:45.13, just off the state record of 1:44.99. O&#8217;Neal senior\u00a0<strong>Hans Johnson\u00a0<\/strong>was second (1:46.22). Van Vooren returned for the 100 freestyle title (48.13).<\/p>\n<p>Van Vooren then teamed up with\u00a0<strong>Brian Hollis<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ryan Koluch<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Brandon Koluch\u00a0<\/strong>to win the 200 freestyle relay in a state record time of 1:30.64.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nathaniel Hartley\u00a0<\/strong>of Gaston Day School set a 200 IM state record with a 1:54.86. The podium was all seniors as\u00a0<strong>Zachery Lorch\u00a0<\/strong>of the Woodlawn School (1:56.62) and\u00a0<strong>Riley Mears\u00a0<\/strong>of St. David&#8217;s (1:57.27) finished second and third. Meats edged Burgess for the 500 freestyle, 4:46.49 to 4:49.54.
