That news was first reported Wednesday by Reuters&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Karolos Grohmann<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">this just in: Hungary withdraws 2024 Olympic bid according to govt spox. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Olympics?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Olympics<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GoBudapest2024?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GoBudapest2024<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LA2024?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LA2024<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Paris2024?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Paris2024<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Karolos Grohmann (@karolosgrohmann) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karolosgrohmann\/status\/834476069960945665?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 22, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karolosgrohmann\/status\/834479685987864576\">later tweet from Grohmann<\/a>, Hungarian politician\u00a0<strong>Zoltan Kovacs<\/strong> confirmed that the bid will be officially withdrawn after a meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister <strong>Viktor Orban<\/strong>, Budapest mayor <strong>Istvan Tarlos\u00a0<\/strong>and the Hungarian Olympic Committee.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Associated Press, Tarlos explained last week that he would strongly consider dropping the bid after a petition for a referendum on the bid reached 266,161 signatures (well above the 138,000 threshold required). That petition suggests re-directing the money earmarked for the Olympics towards improvements in hospitals and education. Rome had been among the short list of candidates, but Rome mayor <strong>Virginia Raggi\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rome-mayor-pulls-support-of-2024-olympic-bid\/\" target=\"_blank\">pulled support for the bid<\/a> in September, and the Italian Olympic Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/italian-national-olympic-committee-president-confirms-end-of-rome-2024-bid\/\" target=\"_blank\">officially withdrew a few weeks later<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The IOC will select between Paris and L.A.\u00a0to host the 2024 Games this September. <a href=\"http:\/\/olympics.nbcsports.com\/2017\/02\/18\/thomas-bach-olympics-2024-2028-ioc\/\" target=\"_blank\">According to the AP<\/a>, IOC President\u00a0<strong>Thomas Bach<\/strong> indicated that the organization may award hosting duties for both 2024 and 2028 at that meeting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Budapest has withdrawn from the bidding to host the 2024 Olympics.
