{"id":242096,"date":"2017-02-21T15:50:25","date_gmt":"2017-02-21T22:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=242096"},"modified":"2017-02-21T15:40:40","modified_gmt":"2017-02-21T22:40:40","slug":"danube-arena-opens-in-hungary-set-for-fina-world-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/danube-arena-opens-in-hungary-set-for-fina-world-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Danube Arena Opens in Hungary, Set for FINA World Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Representatives from FINA and several top Hungarian swimmers today gathered at the arena that will host this summer&#8217;s World Championships in Budapest\u2014now officially dubbed the Danube Arena.<\/p>\n<p>According to a release from FINA, the facility is not ready for a grand opening, but the competition pool and warm-up pool are both open to swimmers for practice. The swimming events for the World Championships will be held in that pool from July 23 to July 30.<\/p>\n<p>In a ceremony with FINA Executive Director\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=cornel+marculescu\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Cornel Marculescu<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0<strong>Viktor Orban\u00a0<\/strong>both present, Budapest mayor\u00a0<strong>Istvan Tarlos<\/strong>\u00a0gave the arena&#8217;s keys\u00a0to Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>. Hosszu and fellow Hungarian swimming greats\u00a0<strong>Laszlo Cseh<\/strong>,<strong> Daniel Gyurta<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Peter Bernek<\/strong> all swam in the pool briefly.<\/p>\n<p>Government commissioner\u00a0<strong>Balazs Furjes<\/strong>\u00a0explained that his group had delivered the promised facility ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;However, we proved once more, that international federations could rely on us, Hungarians, as we are keeping our promises. Few would have believed last May, when we laid down the cornerstone here, that we would be ready on time, or now let me say, two months before the deadline set, while keeping the cost plans.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Marculescu heaped praise upon the facility as an ideal venue for FINA&#8217;s biannual showcase.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;I\u2019ve never witnessed something similar in the past, to deliver a construction like this on such a short term. To tell the truth, when I\u2019m here, I don\u2019t feel I\u2019m in a swimming pool. This place is much more than just a pool.
