Less than a week after being arrested at his parents’ house following a disturbance<\/a> and then being reported missing a day later,\u00a0Grant Hackett<\/strong> has released a statement thanking his family for their support during what he calls the “toughest week” of his life.<\/p>\n

Hackett, a seven-time Olympic medalist for Australia who is widely regarded as the greatest distance swimmer of all time, admitted to having mental health problems and said he plans to seek treatment both in Australia and overseas. He also said he will not be speaking with the media while he deals with these issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to thank my family, in particular my mum and dad for helping me through the toughest week of my life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey have been amazing and have now stood by me through thick and thin \u2014 I can\u2019t say enough about them \u2014 I could not wish for better parents.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy brother and I have reconnected and love each other very much \u2014 our family has always been our priority.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlso the support I have received from so many people in Australia and around the world has also been incredible. I wish I could reply to every single message or well wish I\u2019ve had, which is impossible at present, as I\u2019m so grateful for each and every one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a very private matter that I am going through and I am going to work my way through it. I would appreciate it if everyone would allow me and my family to do everything we need to do.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI know I have some mental health issues and I am seeking help here in Australia and I will be also going overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI will not be talking to media during this time but I urge everyone to please give my family and myself the privacy and respect we need at this delicate time.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
