CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, May 13. THE first evening of action at the USA Swimming Grand Prix event held in North Carolina called the Charlotte UltraSwim featured distance freestyle competition. The meet is being swum in long course meters.<\/p>\n

Mission Viejo's Chloe Sutton, who is far and away the overall series point leader, put more points in her coffer with a triumphant time of 8:30.07 in the women's 800 free. The time fell just short of her season best effort of 8:29.31 from the Ohio State Grand Prix. Club Wolverine's Emily Brunemann placed a distant second in 8:35.31, while Parkland's Taylor O'Brien, 16, led a trio of youngsters in the third, fourth and fifth spots with an 8:47.39. Parkland's Gillian Ryan, 14, and North Baltimore's Willa Wang, 15, finished fourth and fifth in 8:50.59 and 8:52.51. <\/p>\n

Club Wolverine's Peter Vanderkaay moved into sixth in the world this year in the men's 1500 free with a top time of 15:05.96. Only five other swimmers have been faster so far, with Canada's Ryan Cochrane at the top of the heap with a 14:56.83 to his credit. West Shore Y's Josef Kinderwater clinched second in 15:38.11, well off Vanderkaay's pace, while Martin Grodzki picked up third in 15:50.13.
