THE second day of the Irish Long Course Nationals is in the books with the European contingent picking up plenty of the top times in each event.  The NCSA All Star team still performed well, however, as the team continues to adjust to the rigors of an international trip.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Miley, who already is third in the world rankings this year with a 4:37.05 from March, eased through the women&#39;s 400 IM with a winning time of 4:41.61. Youngster Sycerika McMahon, 15, took second overall in 4:51.65, while Courtney Otto placed third in 4:51.88. Sean Leahy knocked off NCSA&#39;s Eric Solis, 4:31.45 to 4:31.77, in the men&#39;s 400 IM. Jordan Jones claimed third in 4:32.53. <\/p>\n<p>Ireland&#39;s Andrew Meegan put together an intelligent swim in the men&#39;s 800 freestyle, surging ahead in the middle of the race and holding on for dear life as NCSA&#39;s Clay Youngquist put on the afterburners down the final 50.  Meegan claimed the touchout triumph, 8:15.40 to 8:15.75.  Meegan finished just a second-and-a-half back of his Irish record of 8:13.51 set last year.  NCSA&#39;s Matt Barber completed the podium with a third-place time of 8:21.31. <\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#39;s Georgia Davis cruised to victory in the women&#39;s 100 back with a time of 1:02.04.  She won by more than a second over NCSA&#39;s Caitlyn Forman, who touched second in 1:03.44. Ireland&#39;s Aisling Cooney, who holds the Irish record with a 1:02.24 from 2008, wound up third in 1:03.95. NCSA went 1-2-3 in the men&#39;s 100 back.  John Conger cleared 58 seconds with a winning time of 57.89, while Philip Aronica took second in 58.13. Preston Jenkins, 15, wound up third in 58.16.<\/p>\n<p>Shauna Smith, 17, lowered the Irish junior national record in the women&#39;s 50 fly with a winning time of 28.19.  That swim cleared the 28.26 set by Shauna O&#39;Brien in July of last year.  NCSA&#39;s Kathryn Kinnear touched second in 28.37, while O&#39;Brien, 15, finished third in 28.47. NCSA&#39;s Roger Miesfeld turned in a 24.76 to win the men&#39;s 50 fly, while Steven McQuillan finished second for the home crowd with a 25.27. NCSA&#39;s Sean Fletcher grabbed third in 25.38. <\/p>\n<p>NCSA&#39;s Rachel Naurath, Maddie Locus, Kiera Janzen and Elizabeth Pepper won the women&#39;s 800 free relay in 8:21.33, while teammate Denninghoff, Haley Sims, Kinnear and Aja Van Hout finished second in 8:37.71. NCSA&#39;s Matt Barber, Matthew Belecanech, Thomas Stephens and Clay Youngquist took home the men&#39;s 800 free relay title in 7:41.47. <\/p>\n<p>In semifinal swimming, Clare Dawson paced the women&#39;s 100 free in 56.73.  NCSA&#39;s Sarah Denninghoff qualified second in 57.49. Fiona Doyle led the way in the women&#39;s 100 breast with a 1:11.31, while Great Britain&#39;s Hannah Miley placed second in 1:11.42.  Great Britain&#39;s Jak Scott topped the men&#39;s 100 free semis with a 51.53, while NCSA&#39;s Clay Youngquist finished second in 51.79. Barry Murphy put up a 1:03.10 for the top time in the men&#39;s 100 breast, while NCSA&#39;s Kevin Cordes finished right behind with a 1:03.67.<\/p>\n<p>Results from the women&#39;s 800 free were not made available by meet management.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For complete coverage of the NCSA All Star Team trip to the Irish Nationals, click here.
