﻿{"id":240247,"date":"2017-02-09T16:00:13","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T23:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=240247"},"modified":"2017-02-10T10:40:14","modified_gmt":"2017-02-10T17:40:14","slug":"in-battle-of-bay-area-rivals-stanford-prevails-over-cal-in-womens-water-polo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/in-battle-of-bay-area-rivals-stanford-prevails-over-cal-in-womens-water-polo\/","title":{"rendered":"In Battle of Bay Area Rivals, Stanford Prevails over Cal in Women\u2019s Water Polo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Michael Randazzo, Swimming World Contributor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last weekend at the 17<sup>th<\/sup> annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gostanford.com\/news\/2017\/1\/24\/womens-water-polo-2017-stanford-invitational.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Stanford Invitational<\/a>, the host <strong>Cardinal\u2019s<\/strong> top-ranked women\u2019s water polo team passed its first big test of the season with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gostanford.com\/news\/2017\/2\/5\/womens-water-polo-stanford-wins-home-invite.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">10-7<\/a>\u00a0win over #4 <strong>U Cal Berkeley <\/strong>(8-1). The victory assured that Stanford (7-0) would remain the nation\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collegiatewaterpolo.org\/varsity\/polls\/women\/2017\/2017Week4\" target=\"_blank\">top-ranked team<\/a> for at least another week, with #2 <strong>USC<\/strong> (10-0)\u2014which is unbeaten in its last 37 matches\u2014and #3 <strong>UCLA<\/strong> (7-0) just behind.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Invitational presented a number of compelling storylines, none more significant than the return of senior <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/sports\/w-senior\/mtt\/maggie_steffens_833878.html\" target=\"_blank\">Maggie Steffens<\/a><\/strong> to the Cardinal roster following a year off pursuing Olympic goal in Rio.<\/p>\n<p>Steffen\u2019s coach, <strong>John Tanner<\/strong>, was effusive in his praise for his captain, already a two-time Olympic gold medalist: \u201cMaggie is just an incredible leader, an\u2026extremely diligent athlete and one who trains so hard,\u201d he said by email following Sunday\u2019s championship. \u201cShe\u2019s a great role model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining Steffens on the Stanford roster was fellow Olympian <strong>Makenzie Fischer<\/strong>, a freshman making her first appearance at the Invitational and another reason the Cardinal presents an imposing challenge in this post-Olympic year.<\/p>\n<p>Looking to crash the Cardinal\u2019s pool party was an undefeated Cal squad sporting three Olympians of its own\u2014<strong>Dora Antal<\/strong> and <strong>Anna Illes<\/strong> of Hungary and <strong>Roser<\/strong> <strong>Tarrago<\/strong> of Spain\u2014as well as a new coach with an Olympic pedigree and strong ties to many of the featured players at the eight-team tournament.<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>Coralie Simmons<\/strong>, tapped last fall to join a storied Bear program that lists 14 NCAA titles on the men\u2019s side\u2014including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calbears.com\/news\/2016\/12\/4\/mens-water-polo-champions-again-cal-wins-14th-national-title.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">2016 championship<\/a>\u2014but none on the women\u2019s, the Invitational was an opportunity to see her young squad match up with the sport\u2019s best.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe attacked the game with a lot of energy and rivalry getting in the pool with Stanford,\u201d Simmons said following the match. \u201cWe had a good surge in the middle quarters but came up short in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new Cal coach, a member of the U.S. squad that captured silver at the 2000 Olympics in Australia, spoke with confidence about her team\u2019s interesting mix of young players (17 underclassmen) and athletes with international experience: \u201cWe have a strong and experienced upper class, athletes who, when things are tough, our young athletes are going to learn from and [whose experience] they\u2019re able to fall back on.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_240260\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-240260\" data-attachment-id=\"240260\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/in-battle-of-bay-area-rivals-stanford-prevails-over-cal-in-womens-water-polo\/cal_wp_save\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cal_WP_Save-e1486594185590.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"800,533\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"cal_trabucco_02_17\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;cal_trabucco_02_17&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Photo Courtesy: Peter Trabucco&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cal_WP_Save-700x500.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cal_WP_Save-1024x683.jpg\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-240260\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cal_WP_Save-700x500.jpg\" alt=\"cal_trabucco_02_17\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-240260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: Peter Trabucco<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Also in the Mix, a Midwest Power<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A counterpoint to the rivalry between the two Northern California teams was provided by #7 <strong>Michigan<\/strong> and their head coach <strong>Marcelo Leonardi<\/strong>. The Wolverines came into this season following an outstanding 2016 that saw them win 30 games while achieving their highest-ever ranking (#4), after a fourth-place finish at last year\u2019s NCAAs.<\/p>\n<p>On the Invitational\u2019s first day, Leonardi faced Cal\u2019s Simmons, his former assistant on the U.S. Women\u2019s Youth National Team. Both admitted to no hard feelings as the Bears topped the Wolverines 13-9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoralie and I have a great relationship. The rich conversations that we have, from technical to tactical to motivation, to things that are happening in our families,\u201d Leonardi said later, following his team\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mgoblue.com\/sports\/w-wpolo\/recaps\/020517aad.html\" target=\"_blank\">8-6 win<\/a> over Hawaii in a third-place match.<\/p>\n<p>A part of Leonardi\u2019s staff for the past four years\u2014including 2014, when the U.S. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/sports\/w-youth\/recaps\/083114aaa.html\" target=\"_blank\">won gold in Madrid<\/a> at the FINA World Women\u2019s Youth Water Polo Championships\u2014Simmons not only knows many of the athletes competing at the Invitational, she\u2019s very familiar with her mentor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know each other very well, not only on a personal level but professionally,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have [insights] on each other\u2014[it\u2019s like] Cliff Notes on what the next move is going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Home Team Holds On<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But in Sunday\u2019s final it was the Cardinal holding off the Bears to take the title back from Cal, last year\u2019s winner, in what the Stanford coach acknowledged has implications for the NCAA tournament in May. Last year, only four teams from the <strong>Mountain Pacific Sports Federation<\/strong>\u2014Stanford, UCLA, USC and Arizona State\u2014made it. Cal was the odd team out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQualifying for NCAAs is a big deal,\u201d said Tanner. \u201cYou get the automatic [bid] by winning your conference tournament, but it\u2019s not a given, so these [matches] are a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now that he has his full roster back, Tanner admits that his biggest challenge may be managing his players\u2019 expectations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve always seen the bar as being set high, and that\u2019s the way it is with our program,&#8221;\u00a0he explained. &#8220;However you want to contextualize it, it just comes down to the fact that they have high expectations for themselves every day throughout all their endeavors on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Michael Randazzo, Swimming World Contributor.
