DURBAN, South Africa, April 13. THE second night of action at the South Africa Long Course Nationals witnessed some world-class efforts by some veteran names in the country.<\/p>\n
Roland Schoeman blasted to a 23.58 in the men's 50 fly in semifinal action. That effort moved him into a tie with Fred Bousquet for second in the world this year behind only Geoff Huegill (23.46). Bousquet clocked his time in French finals today, leaving Schoeman with another chance to go lower. Neil Watson qualified second in 24.32. <\/p>\n
Also in semis, Cameron Van Der Burgh turned in a swift time with a 1:00.96 to lead qualifying in the men's 100 breast. He joined a handful of swimmers under 1:01 this year that include Brenton Rickard (1:00.19), Hugues Duboscq (1:00.61) and Christian Sprenger (1:00.91). <\/p>\n
Vanessa Mohr touched out Mandy Loots for the women's 50 fly title, 27.74 to 27.79. Chanelle Van Wyk grabbed third overall in the sprint fly with a 28.21. Van Wyk later led the women's 100 back semis with a 1:02.63. <\/p>\n
Gerhard Zandberg performed well in the men's 50 back with a winning 25.76. Ricky Ellis placed second in 25.84. Charl Van Zyl placed third in 26.00. Taryn Mackenzie won the women's 50 breast title in 33.22. Jeanie Du Toit placed second in 33.42, while Keri Plumstead finished third in 33.46. <\/p>\n
Jean Basson captured the men's 200 free crown in 1:48.48. Darian Townsend (1:49.68) and Sebastian Rousseau (1:50.22) placed second and third. <\/p>\n
In other semifinal rounds, Karin Prinsloo paced the women's 100 free in 56.28. Leone Vorster (56.47) and Eleni Kosti (56.82) qualified second and third. <\/p>\n
In multi-disability events, Craig Groenewald was listed first in the men's 50 fly with a 28.63, while Natalie Du Toit was listed first in the women's 50 fly in 31.98. Kevin Paul was listed first in the men's 100 breast with a 1:08.72, while Yvonne Smith was listed first in the women's 100 breast with a 1:34.82. <\/p>\n
