{"id":239779,"date":"2017-02-05T21:07:03","date_gmt":"2017-02-06T04:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=239779"},"modified":"2017-02-05T21:07:03","modified_gmt":"2017-02-06T04:07:03","slug":"acc-weekly-recap-finishing-touches-on-regular-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/acc-weekly-recap-finishing-touches-on-regular-season\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC Weekly Recap: Finishing Touches on Regular Season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week in the ACC, Notre Dame faced Ball State in dual meet action, and both Virginia Tech and North Carolina* hosted unscored invitational meets that served as tune-ups for swimmers bound for the ACC championships and an end-of-season meet for those not going to conference.<\/p>\n<p>Note the asterisk next to North Carolina: after one prelims session, the meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/finals-at-unc-invitational-moved-to-duke-due-to-water-emergency\/\" target=\"_blank\">was relocated to Duke<\/a> (less than ten miles away) due to a water main break in Chapel Hill. But the meet itself continued as scheduled, albeit inside the more intimate Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.<\/p>\n<p>The NC State Wolfpack, expected to challenge for the women&#8217;s ACC title and win a third straight title on the men&#8217;s side, performed well at the meet, including winning nine out of ten individual events Saturday night. In the women&#8217;s competition, the Wolfpack&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Natalie Labonge\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 53.29 to win the 100 fly, and sprinter\u00a0<strong>Ky-Lee Perry<\/strong> dominated the 100 back, finishing in 53.87.<\/p>\n<p>UNC&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Madison Boswell<\/strong> won both the 200 (2:02.78) and 400 IM (4:14.44) and finished second in the 200 fly, while teammate\u00a0<strong>Erica Wirth<\/strong> won the 500 and 1650 free. Also in action in Durham was\u00a0Florida State, and the Seminoles got a victory from\u00a0<strong>McKenna Harris<\/strong> in the women&#8217;s 200 breast (2:16.36).<\/p>\n<p>The Wolfpack men saw\u00a0<strong>Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>win the 200 IM in 1:44.43, and he finished second behind\u00a0<strong>Ryan Held<\/strong> in the 100 fly, 46.55 to 46.90. Duke, meanwhile, finished 1-2-3-4-5 in the men&#8217;s 100 breast.\u00a0<strong>Peter Kropp\u00a0<\/strong>led the way in 52.60 (the ninth-best time in the country), followed by fellow senior\u00a0<strong>Dylan Payne<\/strong> (53.66).<\/p>\n<p>Full results can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/virginia-tech-invite-results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Christiansburg, Va., at Virginia Tech&#8217;s meet,\u00a0<strong>Reka Gyorgy<\/strong> blasted a 1:57.94 in the women&#8217;s 200 IM for a new VT school record, and teammates\u00a0<strong>Chris Outlaw\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Nick Olson<\/strong> tied for the win in the 50 free in 20.36.<\/p>\n<p>On day two, two Hokie swimmers earned NCAA &#8220;B&#8221; cuts: senior <strong>Zach Switzer<\/strong> in the men&#8217;s 100 breast (55.38) and freshman\u00a0<strong>Chloe Hicks\u00a0<\/strong>in the women&#8217;s 200 back (1:56.58).\u00a0Auburn and the hosting Hokies combined to win every event on the program. The Fighting Irish men dominated the meet and won by a final score of 148.5-82.5, while the women wrapped up a 129-108 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the action in Muncie, Ind., were three Lewellen Aquatic Center pool records: the women&#8217;s 200 medley relay team of\u00a0<strong>Catherine<\/strong> <strong>Mulquin<\/strong>,<strong> Meaghan<\/strong> <strong>O\u2019Donnell<\/strong>, <strong>Nikki Smith<\/strong> and <strong>Katie Smith<\/strong> posted a time of 1:43.02, while their male counterparts followed suit, coming in at 1:31.07. That foursome included\u00a0<strong>Jack<\/strong> <strong>Montesi<\/strong>, <strong>Trent<\/strong> <strong>Jackson<\/strong>, <strong>Justin<\/strong> <strong>Plaschka<\/strong> and <strong>Daniel Speers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the meet,\u00a0<strong>Matt Grauslys<\/strong> (50.12) and\u00a0<strong>Kevin Bradley\u00a0<\/strong>(50.32) both went under the pool record in sweeping the top two spots in the men&#8217;s 100 back.
