FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 7. THE first night of competition at the YMCA Short Course Nationals produced a trio of YMCA marks, two by Springfield's Margo Geer. Geer is headed to the University of Arizona after this summer.<\/p>\n
Geer and Triangle Area's Sabrina Benson both clipped Geer's YMCA record of 54.19 set in the women's 100 back a year ago. Geer touched out Benson, 54.04 to 54.09, for the victory. Middle Tyger's Annie Gillig finished third in 54.64. Geer doubled up with another YMCA record. She continued to demonstrate her sprint prowess with a 22.67 in the women's 50 free. That effort edged her previous 2009 YMCA record of 22.68 by the slimmest of margins. Anne Arundel's Emily Lloyd touched second in 22.94, while UpperMainLine's Shannon Rauth grabbed third in 23.40. <\/p>\n
Schroeder's Mitchell Friedemann cleared the men's 50 free YMCA record with a top time of 20.33. That swim pipped the 20.34 set by Gary Grant back in 2003. Elkins' Tim Squires took second in 20.72, while Bath Area's James Wells placed third in 20.75. Friedemann doubled by winning the men's 100 back in 47.61, just off Jayme Cramer's 2000 record of 47.34. Wells placed second in 47.98, while Steven Zimmerman of Countryside took third overall in 48.62.<\/p>\n
Sarasota's Nicholas Caldwell produced the second YMCA record of the day with a scorching 4:20.28 in the men's 500 free. That swim crushed the 4:21.74 set by Morgan Priestley back in 2008. M.E. Lyons' Alex Miller (4:26.34) and Pottstown's John Hauser (4:28.35) rounded out the top three. <\/p>\n
Middle Tyger's Haley Lips triumphed in a close battle for the women's 500 free crown. Lips held off a hard-charging Hail Flickinger of York, 4:44.14 to 4:44.19. Not far behind, Wilton's Shelby Fortin wound up third overall in 4:44.87. <\/p>\n
In another close contest, York's Sada Stewart won the women's 200 IM in 2:01.15, just holding off Gillig. Gillig claimed her second podium of the day with a 2:01.27 for second, improving upon her third-place finish in the 100 back. Wilton's K.C. Moss completed the podium in 2:02.85. <\/p>\n
Triangle Area's Dominick Glavich touched in 1:48.77 for the men's 200 IM victory. UpperMainLine's Matthew Salig finished second in 1:49.99, while Middle Tyger's David Ingraham claimed third in 1:50.22. <\/p>\n
In relay action, Chesire's Lauren Solernou, Kim Jerome, Justine Ress and Elizabeth McDonald won the women's 200 medley relay in 1:44.22, while Middle Tyger's Jay Warner, Jared Kauffman, David Ingraham and James Weber topped the men's 200 medley relay in 1:31.19.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
