The midway point between two Olympic Games always marks the quadrennial low tide for our sport.<br \/>\n\tThe work on pool decks and in the water now takes center stage.<br \/>\n\tThis is the period of time when the everyday people, behind the scenes, need to be recognized\u2014the unsung heroes who complete the daily grind that allows the sport to shine every four years.<br \/>\n\tWhen was the last time you thanked the following people?<br \/>\n\u2022 The school, city or club that allows you to use their facility<br \/>\n\u2022 The president of your parent group who goes to bat for your program each and every time<br \/>\n\u2022 The staff that questions ideas behind closed doors, but supports ideas in public<br \/>\n\u2022 The college athlete who comes back each summer and inspires the younger team members<br \/>\n\u2022 The local sponsors in your area<br \/>\n\u2022 The officials who volunteer year after year<br \/>\n\u2022 The parent who gets his or her athlete to practice on time<br \/>\n\u2022 The teachers who support missing school days for meet travel<br \/>\n\u2022 The crew who always keeps the pool and locker rooms clean<br \/>\n\u2022 The local swim shop for team discounts<br \/>\n\u2022 The meet announcer for his or her enthusiasm<br \/>\n\u2022 The local newspaper for covering the sport\u2014no matter how little or great<br \/>\n\u2022 The athlete for showing up every day<br \/>\n\u2022 The parent for organizing the team dinner<br \/>\n\u2022 The coach who did not hold back his or her best athlete from moving to another coach<br \/>\n\u2022 The young swimmer who helps with swim lessons<br \/>\n\u2022 The coach&#39;s spouse who never complains of late dinners and long-working weekends<br \/>\n\u2022 The parent who never complains<br \/>\n\u2022 The parent who complains, but still supports the team&#39;s goals<br \/>\n\u2022 The coach who admits it when he or she is wrong<br \/>\n\u2022 The athlete who rarely wins, but never gives up<br \/>\n\u2022 The board member who has an open mind on all debatable questions<br \/>\n\u2022 The staff member who can discuss without arguing<br \/>\n\u2022 The team member who discourages gossip within your program<br \/>\n\u2022 The person who can disagree with you and still be friendly<br \/>\n\u2022 &#8230;Or the person who never let an opportunity pass without saying a kind or encouraging word to\u2014or about\u2014somebody in your program.<br \/>\n\tThese are the people who carry the buckets of molten ore that form the medals of tomorrow. These are the people who make up the team that creates the environment for all of your future success.
