SHEFFIELD, England, April 3. THE final night of swimming at the British Gas Swimming Championships featured a pair of near world bests in long course competition.<\/p>\n
Ellen Gandy leapfrogged Samantha Hamill into second in the world this year in the women's 200 fly. Gandy clocked a 2:07.70 to win the finale tonight, improving upon her season-best time of 2:07.77. That swim moved her past Hamill's 2:07.75 from Australia last month, and just behind Jessicah Schipper's world-best 2:07.65 also set Down Under. Jemma Lowe finished second tonight in 2:08.21, moving up to fifth in the world, while Alys Thomas placed third in 2:11.54. <\/p>\n
Hannah Miley joined Gandy in the two spot with a 4:37.05 to win the women's 400 IM. That swim pushed her to second-fastest in the world this year behind only Stephanie Rice (4:35.04). Miley is also one of just three swimmers to break 4:38 so far, with Ariana Kukors (4:37.63) being the other. Aimee Willmott finished second in 4:41.90, while Keri-Anne Payne took third in 4:43.17. <\/p>\n
Michael Jamieson (2:11.14), Richard Webb (2:11.52) and Kristopher Gilchrist (2:11.60) all moved into the top 10 in the world in the men's 200 breast. Only Brenton Rickard (2:09.31), Eric Shanteau (2:10.84) and Kosuke Kitajima (2:11.33) have also cleared 2:12 this year.<\/p>\n
Simon Burnett turned in a 22.53 to win the men's 50 free, while Adam Brown placed second in 22.62. Grant Turner claimed the third spot with a 22.95 to complete the sub-23 second performances. On the other end of the spectrum, Daniel Fogg wound up with the men's 1500 free title in 15:18.73. Thomas Allen (15:32.35) and Matthew Johnson (15:36.11) placed second and third.<\/p>\n
