﻿{"id":238886,"date":"2017-01-28T18:36:32","date_gmt":"2017-01-29T01:36:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=238886"},"modified":"2017-01-30T08:29:09","modified_gmt":"2017-01-30T15:29:09","slug":"acc-saturday-recap-nc-state-takes-down-virginia-historic-sweep-for-duke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/acc-saturday-recap-nc-state-takes-down-virginia-historic-sweep-for-duke\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC Saturday Recap: NC State Takes Down Virginia; Historic Sweep for Duke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The North Carolina State Wolfpack continued their stellar spring with a sweep of Virginia in their final dual meet.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/acc-friday-recap-nc-state-dominates-rival-north-carolina-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">After beating UNC Friday night<\/a>, NC State returned to the pool Saturday afternoon, and wins in all four relays propelled the No. 9 Wolfpack women to a 153-147 win over No. 5 Virginia and the No. 3 NC State men to a 177-109 beatdown of No. 13 UVA.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s meet was highly anticipated dual between two teams that figure to go head-to-head for the ACC championship next month in Atlanta. The Cavaliers will be going for a tenth-straight conference championship this year, but the Wolfpack will be tough, despite having not won the ACC since 1980.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman\u00a0<strong>Ky-Lee Perry\u00a0<\/strong>continued her strong run against Virginia with wins in both the 50 (22.46) and 100 free (48.96), and she led off the meet-ending 200 free relay in a blistering 22.23 as the Wolfpack went on to win the meet-deciding race, 1:28.77 to 1:29.84.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexia Zevnik\u00a0<\/strong>also won two events, edging out UVA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Morgan Hill<\/strong> to win the 200 free, 1:47.42 to 1:47.45, before taking the 200 back in 1:56.41. For UVA,\u00a0<strong>Leah Smith&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>final collegiate dual meet included, as did so many others, a sweep of the 500 (4:40.41) and 1000 free (9:32.67), and teammate\u00a0<strong>Kaitlyn Jones<\/strong> swept the butterfly events.\u00a0<strong>Kirsten Parkinson<\/strong> won both diving events for the Cavaliers.<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#8217;s side, it was never any contest as NC State won every single event. The familiar faces came through for the Wolfpack: <strong>Anton Ipsen<\/strong> swept wins in the 1000 free (8:57.25), 500 free (4:22.54) and 400 IM (3:51.91).\u00a0<strong>Ryan Held\u00a0<\/strong>clocked fast times of 1:35.66 to win the 200 free and 42.77 to win the 100 free, while\u00a0<strong>Hennessey Stuart\u00a0<\/strong>swept the backstrokes,\u00a0<strong>Derek Hren<\/strong> won both breaststrokes, and\u00a0<strong>Harrison Mitchell\u00a0<\/strong>twice finished first on the boards.<\/p>\n<p>Find full results from Raleigh by clicking <a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/virginia-nc-state-results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Duke Breaks Drought with Sweep at UNC<\/h3>\n<p>The long-standing rivalry between Duke and North Carolina that stretched across all sports had hardly ever crossed over into swimming. The Blue Devils compete against the Tar Heels every year, usually at the very end of dual meet season, but the Duke men had last beaten UNC in 1939. The Duke women had\u00a0<em>never<\/em>\u00a0won against UNC.<\/p>\n<p>Those streaks both ended Saturday in Chapel Hill when Duke handed the Tar Heels their second loss of the weekend after Friday evening.\u00a0Duke won all four relays contested and picked up wins by scores of 173-126 for the men and 163-137 for the women.<\/p>\n<p>For Duke&#8217;s women,\u00a0<strong>Verity Abel\u00a0<\/strong>swept wins in both the 500 (4:53.62) and 1000 free (9:56.56), and teammate\u00a0<strong>Leah Goldman\u00a0<\/strong>finished on top in the 200 free (1:49.81) and 200 IM (2:01.63) while also finishing second in the 100 free.\u00a0<strong>Ashleigh Shanley<\/strong> won the 100 breast and finished second in the 200 breast.<\/p>\n<p>For UNC,\u00a0<strong>Hellen Moffitt<\/strong> did her part with wins in the 100 back (53.32), 200 back (1:56.77) and 100 fly (53.01), and teammate\u00a0<strong>Sarah Hitchens<\/strong> won the 50 and 100 free, but Duke&#8217;s depth proved too much for the Tar Heels.<\/p>\n<p>Duke sophomore\u00a0<strong>Max St George\u00a0<\/strong>led his squad with wins in the 100 (49.33) and 200 back (1:46.65). Teammate\u00a0<strong>Dylan Payne<\/strong> had a come-from-behind win in the 100 breast, and\u00a0<strong>Michael Miller<\/strong> did the same in the 200 fly. Duke&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Evan Moretti\u00a0<\/strong>(one-meter) and\u00a0<strong>Nathaniel Hernandez<\/strong> (three-meter) swept the diving events.<\/p>\n<p>For the Tar Heel men,\u00a0<strong>Henry Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>was the top performer, picking up wins in the 1000 (9:!5.00) and 500 free (4:27.02) before finishing second in the 200 IM. Pierce won the 100 breast in 1:02.88, and Loh took the 200 in 2:17.40.\u00a0<strong>Lydia Ware<\/strong> won both the 100 free and 200 IM, <strong>Blaire Mulka<\/strong> picked up two diving wins,\u00a0and the Noles also won both medley relays. GT&#8217;s top female performer was freshman\u00a0<strong>Emily Ilgenfritz<\/strong>, who won the 1000 and 500 freestyles.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#8217;s meet,\u00a0Florida State picked up two relay wins and two diving wins (<strong>Tyler Roberge\u00a0<\/strong>on three-meter and\u00a0<strong>Dylan Grisell<\/strong> on one-meter), and\u00a0<strong>Connor Kalisz<\/strong> was the top individual performer with two backstroke wins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moises Loschi<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Ben Southern\u00a0<\/strong>again came through big for the Yellow Jackets. Loschi won the 1000 free (9:22.76), 100 breast (54.81) and 200 breast (1:59.18), while Southern touched first in the 200 fly (1:46.98) and 100 fly (48.16).\u00a0Find full results by clicking <a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/georgia-tech-florida-state-scad-results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Notre Dame\u00a0Men Win Shamrock Invitational, Women Finish Second<\/h3>\n<p>In a two-day, three-session meet that mimicked a championship schedule (although every event was timed finals), the Fighting Irish men finished first in their home pool with 1192.5 points, well ahead of Wisconsin (1007). Dolan joined\u00a0<strong>Lauren Heller<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Reilly Lanigan<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Kyra Sarazen<\/strong> to win the 800 free relay in 7:15.11, and\u00a0<strong>Claire Andrews<\/strong> finished first in one-meter diving.
