SAN ANTONIO, Texas, March 27. IN and out of the water since the 2008 Paralympic Summer Games in Beijing, Justin Zook (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) came back to prove that he still has it and he did just that on day two of the Paralympic Spring National Swimming Can-Am Championships breaking both the American and Pan-Am record in the 100m backstroke (S10) with a time of 1:01.14. Then in the 50m freestyle (S10), reaching for the win Zook beat out Canadian, Benoit Huot by barely two-tenths of a second with a time of 25.58.<\/p>\n
"It felt good to get back in the water and race again," said Zook, who began training again in mid-January of this year.<\/p>\n
"I had surgery a month after Beijing and had to be out of the water for nine months then I was back in the water for three," said Zook. "Then I had to take a break again because of Grad school."<\/p>\n
The U.S. had several swimmers break records on day two of competition. Among them was Mallory Weggemann (Eagan, Minn) breaking the World, American and Pan-Am record in the 50m freestyle (S7) with a time of 32.74. Breaking records in the 100m backstroke was Cortney Jordan (Henderson, Nev.) and Kelly Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.) and in the 200m independent medley was Anna Johannes (Alexandria, Va.) and Joe Wise (Menlo Park, Calif.).<\/p>\n
