Siblings Shine on Opening Day of Australia Open Water Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The opening day of the 2017 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships has seen a pair of siblings take the next steps towards world championship selection with\u00a0<strong>Chelsea<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Gubecka<\/strong>\u00a0and her sister\u00a0<strong>Chloe<\/strong>\u00a0as well as\u00a0<strong>Jack<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Brazier<\/strong>\u00a0and his sister\u00a0<strong>Mackenzie<\/strong>\u00a0all finishing inside the top four in the men\u2019s and women\u2019s open 10km event.<\/p>\n<p>Brighton Beach in South Australia was the perfect backdrop for the championships, with ideal conditions for our athletes to take on a true open water course.<\/p>\n<p>After a welcome speech from Assistant Minister to the Premier Katrine Hildyard, the women were off and racing for the 10km title.<\/p>\n<p>Talented teenager Chelsea hit the finish gate just over a minute ahead of the field to take gold and the Australian title and was then able to turn around and witness her 14-year-old sister Chloe finish as the third fastest Australian and join her on the team that will travel to Abu Dhabi world cup for world championship selection.<\/p>\n<p>If successful in Abu Dhabi this will be Chelsea\u2019s third world championship team, and at just 18 years of age, and with an Olympic Games also under her belt, this is an incredible feat for the Kawana Waters swimmer.<\/p>\n<p>After making her first team at just 14, her sister Chloe could replicate that feat if she is able to overcome the always competitive Lee and fellow up and comer Mackenzie.<\/p>\n<p>The sisters were split with World Championship representative\u00a0<strong>Kareena<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Lee<\/strong>\u00a0clocked a time of 2:07.28 while 15-year-old Mackenzie rounded out the top four Aussies in 2:08.01.<\/p>\n<p>Just hours earlier Mackenzie\u2019s older brother Jack put on a stellar performance in the men\u2019s 10km to take home the silver medal behind Olympian\u00a0<strong>Jarrod<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Poort<\/strong>\u00a0and also secure his spot in the Abu Dhabi final selection event.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian swimmer Eric Hedlin hit the finish gate first, over a two minutes ahead of the rest of the field to win gold in a time of 1:55.01.<\/p>\n<p>Poort was the first Australian home in 1:57.48, taking his Australian Open 10km title tally to four, using his power to get over the top of the field as the pack fought for a top four finish and a chance at World Championship selection.<\/p>\n<p>After capturing the hearts of the nation with his emphatic swim in the Men\u2019s 10km event at last year\u2019s Rio Olympics Poort is shaping up to be a real pioneer in Australian Open Water Swimming.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old\u2019s smart swimming style saw him claim victory in a sprint to the finish over up and comer, Brazier (1:49.30) with\u00a0<strong>Kai<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Edwards<\/strong>\u00a0the third Aussie home in 1:57.50, and\u00a0<strong>Lachlan<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Colquhoun<\/strong>\u00a0fourth with a time of 1:57.52.<\/p>\n<p>The men and women will now switch their attention to the open 5km events\u00a0<span data-term=\"goog_501803077\">on Sunday<\/span>, with straight selection onto the World Championship team up for grabs with a top two finish in Brighton.<\/p>\n<h3>In other events today&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Nicholas<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Rollo<\/strong>\u00a0was the best of the boys in the 17\/18 years 10km wile\u00a0<strong>Jessica<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Lavin<\/strong>\u00a0took victory in the girl\u2019s 17\/18 years 10km.<\/p>\n<p>In a new event for the Championships, the boy\u2019s and girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 7.5km event was won by\u00a0<strong>Reily<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Kennedy<\/strong>from Perth City and\u00a0<strong>Frances<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Shire<\/strong>\u00a0from the University of NSW respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Coming up\u00a0<span data-term=\"goog_501803078\">tomorrow<\/span>\u00a0Paralympic gold medallist from the 400m freestyle\u00a0<strong>Brenden<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Hall<\/strong>\u00a0will dive in for the men\u2019s open Multi Class 5km while the age groupers will also try their hand at the 5km
