On Wednesday, he was named the United States Sports Academy&#8217;s top athlete of the year for 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps concluded his career this summer with five more Olympic gold medals and one silver. He has now won 23 golds, three silvers and two bronze in his legendary career that spans over five Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Phelps has appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-given-lifetime-achievement-honor-on-wheaties-box\/\" target=\"_blank\">a Wheaties box with a Lifetime Achievement award<\/a> and was named the\u00a0<em>Sports Illustrated\u00a0<\/em>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sports-illustrated-to-honor-michael-phelps-at-sportsperson-of-the-year-event\/\" target=\"_blank\">Greatest Olympian of All-Time<\/a>.&#8221; He also posed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-poses-with-all-23-gold-medals-on-sports-illustrated-cover\/\" target=\"_blank\">on\u00a0<em>SI&#8217;s<\/em> cover with all 23 of his Olympic gold medals<\/a> and twice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/september-swimming-world-michael-phelps-olympic-kiss-goodbye\/\" target=\"_blank\">appeared on the cover<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-graces-december-cover-of-swimming-world-magazine\/\" target=\"_blank\">of\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-graces-december-cover-of-swimming-world-magazine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Swimming World Magazine<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nbc-olympics-tweets-first-and-most-recent-phelps-magazine-covers\/\" target=\"_blank\">the 14th and 15th times<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Phelps beat out Jamaican sprinter\u00a0<strong>Usain Bolt<\/strong>, who won three gold medals in Rio, for the Sports Academy award.
