{"id":238231,"date":"2017-01-21T23:43:11","date_gmt":"2017-01-22T06:43:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=238231"},"modified":"2017-01-21T23:43:50","modified_gmt":"2017-01-22T06:43:50","slug":"pac-12-saturday-recap-stanford-tops-arizona-cal-beats-asu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pac-12-saturday-recap-stanford-tops-arizona-cal-beats-asu\/","title":{"rendered":"Pac-12 Saturday Recap: Stanford Tops Arizona; Cal Beats ASU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Dan D\u2019Addona.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Stanford continued its strong weekend showing with a second consecutive road victory.<\/p>\n<p>Junior <strong>Janet Hu<\/strong> won four events and senior <strong>Kassidy Cook<\/strong> swept the diving events to lead No. 2 Stanford women&#8217;s swimming and diving to a 190-104 victory at No. 17 Arizona on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Hu swept the backstroke events, and also claimed the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly. She won the 100 back with a finish of 52.90. Later, she touched the wall at 1:55.34 and edged freshman teammate <strong>Allie Szekely<\/strong> (1:55.90) for the backstroke sweep. She then capped her day with a first-place finish of 52.50 in the fly.<\/p>\n<p>Hu was also part of Stanford&#8217;s winning 200 medley relay as the Cardinal was tops in both relays for the second straight day. <strong>Ally Howe, Heidi Poppe<\/strong>, Hu and <strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong> finished the 200 MR in 1:39.05, while <strong>Lia Neal,<\/strong> Manuel, Howe and <strong>Lindsey Engel<\/strong> raced to stop the clock at 1:31.17 in the 200 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>Neal was first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.39), Poppe touched first in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.12), and Manuel claimed first in the 50 free (22.79). Manuel also won the 100 free at 48.98.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on the diving boards, Cook and <strong>Haley Farnsworth<\/strong> were 1-2 on the 1-meter with scores of 300.08 and 290.55, respectively. Cook then made it a clean sweep when she totaled 283.58 on 3-meter.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore<strong> Ella Eastin<\/strong> won twice with victories in the 200 breast (2:16.82) and the 200 fly (1:57.47).<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> made it a perfect 5-for-5 for her collegiate career in the 500 free. The American record holder won by 14 seconds with a time of 4:36.97. Ledecky swam exhibition in the 400 individual medley and topped the field at 4:11.74.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona freshman <strong>Hannah Cox<\/strong> took second in the 200 free (1:48.06), behind Neal. Cox was then runner-up in the 500 free with 4:50.58, second to Ledecky.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s meet, No. 8 Stanford completed a perfect road trip with a 170-118 win against No. 18 Arizona.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy Yoder<\/strong> (1:39.70) won the 200-yard freestyle.<strong> Abrahm DeVine<\/strong> (3:55.83) claimed the top spot in the 400-yard individual medley. Matt Anderson (55.84) won the 100-yard breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona\u2019s <strong>Chatham Dobbs<\/strong> first won the 50 free with a time of 20.43 and the 100 fly with a time of 48.61.<\/p>\n<h3>Cal sweeps Arizona State<\/h3>\n<p>The Cal men beat Arizona State 160-130 to win their second dual meet in as many days.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore <strong>Nick Norman<\/strong> won the 1,000 freestyle in 9:14.05. Long Gutierrez won the 200 freestyle in 1:35.34.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong> picked up the first of two backstroke wins with a dominant effort in the 100, cruising to a time of 46.42. He won the 200 with a time of 1:41.22, a pool record.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s meet, Cal won 181-111.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore <strong>Amy Bilquist<\/strong>, who captured two backstroke events against Arizona, came through with a pair of victories in the free at the 100- and 200-yard distances. Sophomore <strong>Kathleen Baker<\/strong>, an Olympic silver medalist in the 100-meter back, won the 100 and 200 back, while sophomore<strong> Katie McLaughlin<\/strong> won in both the 200 butterfly and 500 free.<\/p>\n<p>Olympic medalist <strong>Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong> won the 50 free and junior <strong>Noemie Thomas<\/strong> won the 100 fly, as she remained undefeated in the event this season. In addition, senior<strong> Celina Li<\/strong> captured the 400 individual medley and the Bears won the 200 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona State\u2019s <strong>Silja Kansakoski<\/strong> won the 100 breast (1:01.30).<\/p>\n<p>Check out the full results <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calbears.com\/documents\/2017\/1\/21\/\/cal_results.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Utah sweeps BYU<\/h3>\n<p>Utah swimming and diving won big today over rival BYU. The men came out on top with a score of 189-109 and the women were victorious, 181-112.<\/p>\n<p>On senior day, it was freshman<strong> Matteo Sogne<\/strong> who got things started for the Utes. He took first in the 1,000 free touching in at 9:35.18. Sogne would later take first in the 500 free (4:38.95). Ethan Dillard claimed the top spot in the 200 IM, as he touched in at 1:51.59.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel McArthur<\/strong> took first in the 100 back (49.25) as well as the 200 back (1:49.48).<strong> Jack Burton<\/strong> took first in the 100 breast (56.88) and in the 200 breast (2:06.01).<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the individual wins for the Utes was C<strong>olten Montgomery<\/strong> in the 100 fly. He came away with a time of 49.17.<\/p>\n<p>On the women&#8217;s side, it started with <strong>Shayla Archer, Genevieve Robertson, Kristine Pataray<\/strong> and <strong>Gillian St. John<\/strong> taking first in the 200 medley relay. They touched in at 1:43.68.<\/p>\n<p>Utah also captured first place in the 400 free relay as <strong>Dorien Butter, Sarah Lott, Darby Wayner<\/strong> and St. John won with a time of 3:30.50.<\/p>\n<p>Individually, Butter took first in both the 200 free (1:54.12) and the 100 free (52.11). <strong>Mallori Allen<\/strong> claimed the top spot in the 100 back, touching in at 58.11 and also took first in the 200 back (2:05.36).<\/p>\n<h3>Idaho tops Oregon State<\/h3>\n<p>Oregon State women&#8217;s swimming started the meet and ended the meet on a high note with a first place in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay, but came up short against Idaho Saturday morning at the Osborn Aquatic Center. The Beavers fell 136.5-124.5.<\/p>\n<p>In the first event, Oregon State&#8217;s 200-yard medley relay grabbed a first place finish with a time of 1:45.81 to take an early lead. The relay team was made up of <strong>Felicia Anderson, Corrine Shigeta, Andrea Young<\/strong> and<strong> Sophie MacEwan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson ended the regular season with a pair of first place finishes in the backstroke. Anderson finished the 200 with a time of 2:03.69 and the 100 in 56.22.<\/p>\n<p>The Beavers finished the meet with a dominating first-place performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.48 \u2013 four seconds faster than second place.
