{"id":2377,"date":"2001-03-28T07:19:59","date_gmt":"2001-03-28T12:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/uncategorized\/2001\/03\/ncaa-division-1-final-top-25-rankings\/"},"modified":"2014-07-24T18:02:58","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T01:02:58","slug":"ncaa-division-1-final-top-25-rankings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-division-1-final-top-25-rankings\/","title":{"rendered":"NCAA Division 1  FINAL Top 25 Rankings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a year&#39;s absence from short course yards competition at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships for Division I swimmers, 16 American, U.S. Open and NCAA short course yards records were set between the women&#39;s meet in Long Island and the men&#39;s contest in College Station, Texas. <\/p>\n<p>\t In the closest team race ever in women&#39;s Division I swimming, the Lady Bulldogs of Georgia defeated the Stanford Cardinal by just 1-1\/2 points (389-387.5). A strong Texas team claimed the third spot with 350.5 points. <\/p>\n<p>\tCalifornia freshman Natalie Coughlin, Swimmer of the Meet, set American, U.S. Open and NCAA standards in the 100 (51.23) and 200 (1:51.02) backstrokes, and an NCAA record in the100 fly (51.18). Along with teammates Haley Cope, Staciana Stitts and Danielle Becks, Coughlin set an American record in the 400 medley relay (3:34.83). Also in that event, Stanford&#39;s quartet of Shelly Ripple, Tara Kirk, Misty Hyman and Siobhan Cropper set an NCAA and U.S. Open record of 3:32.43. Auburn sophomore Maggie Bowen set an American, U.S .Open andNCAA record in the 200 IM with her time of 1:55.49. Texas&#39; relay team of Colleen Lann\u201a, Tanica Jamison, Kelley Robins and Erin Phenix set an American, U.S. Open and NCAA record in the 200 free relay (1:28.29); Shona Kitson replaced Robins on the 400 free relay to set a U.S. Open and NCAA record 3:14.52.<\/p>\n<p>\tOn the other hand, the men&#39;s competition wasn&#39;t close at all. The Texas Longhorns stampeded the team race with 597.5 points to second place Stanford&#39;s 457.5 and third-place Tennessee&#39;s 330.5. The team was led by American, US. Open and NCAA record-setters senior Nate Dusing (200 IM, 1:42.85) and freshman Brendan Hansen (200 breast, 1:53.11). Texas relays also set American U.S. Open and NCAA records in four out of the five relays: Dusing, Hansen, Tom Hannan and Ian Crocker in the 400 medley (3:05.37); Matt Ulrickson, Hansen, Dusing and Leffie Crawford in the 200 medley (1:24.47); Scott Goldblatt, Dusing, Chris Kemp and Jamie Rauch in the 800 free (6:18.00); and Dusing, Crocker, Hannan and Rauch in the 400 free (2:49.80).<\/p>\n<p>\tTexas swimmers weren&#39;t the only ones to set American, U.S. Open and NCAA records at the meet.. California sophomore Anthony Ervin tied Matt Biondi&#39;s 1987 mark in the 100 free (41.80). Michigan senior Chris Thompson went one better in the 1650 free, setting a record in the event with his 14:26.62; his 1000 free split of 8:44.11 was also a new record.<\/p>\n<p>\tA very special thank you goes to all the sports information directors and others who provided times during the season for the Speedo\/CSCAA Top 25 list!
