{"id":237559,"date":"2017-01-17T11:50:19","date_gmt":"2017-01-17T18:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=237559"},"modified":"2017-01-17T11:50:19","modified_gmt":"2017-01-17T18:50:19","slug":"controversial-kenyan-swimming-federation-president-steps-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/controversial-kenyan-swimming-federation-president-steps-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Controversial Kenyan Swimming Federation President Steps Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kenyan Swimming Federation President\u00a0<strong>Ben Ekumbo<\/strong> announced that he is stepping down, as reported by\u00a0<em>insidethegames<\/em>&#8216;\u00a0<strong>Nick Butler<\/strong> this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Ekumbo also holds positions on the FINA Bureau and also the country&#8217;s National Olympic Committee, but he has been the center of some controversy in recent months after he was arrested in November for allegedly stealing Nike clothing and equipment intended for the national swim team.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of his arrest, authorities found Ekumbo hiding under his bed and confiscated much of the equipment from his apartment. Ekumbo spent three days in jail and was released.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter posted to\u00a0<em>insidethegames<\/em>, Ekumbo terms his departure from the Swimming Federation a &#8220;retirement&#8221; in bold, capital letters. The letter writes that a &#8220;Special General Meeting&#8221; at the end of the month will help determine a plan for succession.<\/p>\n<p>The controversy about stolen gear is not referenced in Ekumbo&#8217;s letter.<\/p>\n<p>This scandal is just another in a line of Kenyan sports controversies. Butler writes that the majority of\u00a0National Olympic Committee officials were arrested after the Olympic Games in Rio.
