{"id":237533,"date":"2017-01-18T11:18:06","date_gmt":"2017-01-18T18:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=237533"},"modified":"2017-01-18T11:18:06","modified_gmt":"2017-01-18T18:18:06","slug":"lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-matt-grevers-100-backstroke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-matt-grevers-100-backstroke\/","title":{"rendered":"LumaLanes Performance of the Week: Matt Grevers&#8217; 100 Backstroke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s LumaLanes Performance of the Week goes to one of the USA Swimming\u2019s biggest stars, who made a triumphant return to the competition pool this weekend at the 2017 Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin, Texas. <\/span><b>Matt Grevers <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/matt-grevers-takes-100-back-gold-at-2017-arena-pro-series-austin\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished his weekend with a gold medal in his signature event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the 100 backstroke, beating out countryman\u00a0<\/span><b>Jacob Pebley <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to take the win in 53.31 and marking his return to national competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Performance of the Week -- Jan. 18, 2017 -- Matt Grevers\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/35NdmqAI0h4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This swim was significant for a few reasons. First, Grevers&#8217; best in-season swim in this event is a 53.05 from the 2010 Austin Pro Series meet, and he has consistently been in the 53-low range at this meet through the years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/matt-grevers-enjoying-fatherhood-and-returning-to-competition\/\">Speaking to the media prior to his race<\/a>, he said he has changed up his training this year but still only did a short three-day rest for this meet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Grevers to be that close to his in-season best shows that his training is on track and should give him some confidence heading into World Champs Trials this summer. He also went\u00a0head to head with 2016 Olympian\u00a0<\/span><b>Jacob Pebley, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who was the top seed out of prelims and was coming off an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jacob-pebley-powers-to-decisive-200-back-victory-at-2017-arena-pro-series-austin\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impressive win from earlier in the meet in the 200 backstroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Pebley trains with backstroke star\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>out in Cal and should continue to be a force in both\u00a0backstroke events in the coming years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But perhaps most significant of all, this was the Olympic gold medalist\u2019s first major meet since the 2016 Olympic Trials, where the 2012 gold medalist finished third in the 100 backstroke, just one spot out of an Olympic berth. As he explained on last week&#8217;s episode of <em>Off Deck<\/em>,\u00a0lot has happened since this summer for Grevers, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/matt-and-annie-grevers-welcome-daughter\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest of all the birth of his daughter, <\/span><b>Skylar<\/b>,<b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back in November<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it appears that the four-time Olympic gold medalist has no intentions of slowing down in the water.
