LYON, France, March 5. THE first day of long course meter action featured preliminary competition only at the International Swim Meet held in Lyon, France.<\/p>\n
Randall Bal of the U.S. closed to within a second of his American record in the men's 50 back with a time of 25.33. The performance cleared the meet record, which Bal will look to lower in finals tomorrow. Matteo Giordano provided the closest competition with a second-seeded 26.20.<\/p>\n
Italy's Samuel Pizzetti clocked a meet record in the men's 1500 free with a 15:19.53. Anthony Pannier (15:22.53) and Riccardo De Lucia (15:37.22) finished behind him. Kayleigh Dawson led the women's 800 free in 8:55.03. Chiara Giacone (8:59.16) and Sharaon Van Rouwendaal (9:01.22) completed the top three.<\/p>\n
The Netherlands' foursome of Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Hinkelien Schreuder, Inge Dekker and Clarissa Van Rheenen went 1-2-3-4 to lead the way in the women's 50 free. Kromowidjojo topped qualifying in 25.08, while Schreuder touched in 25.48. Dekker (26.13) and Van Rheenen (26.59) will bracket them in the finale. Italy's Marco Orsi (22.89) and Luca Dotto (23.03) earned the top seeds in the men's 50 free.<\/p>\n
Dekker and Schreuder returned in the women's 50 fly for the top two seeds. Dekker led the way with a 26.72, while Schreuder checked in with a 27.80. Romain Sassot topped the men's 50 fly qualifying in 24.73 with Joeri Verlinden close behind in 24.86. <\/p>\n
Marco Sommaripa paced the men's 50 breast qualifying in 28.62, while Ukraine's Igor Borysik qualified second in 29.04. Wendy Van Der Zanden picked up the top seed in the women's 50 back with a time of 29.62, while Valentina De Nardi posted a 29.87 for the second seed.
